How far north is this? Once you get to Aceh you won't see women with thier heads left uncovered.

I guess I'm about thirty kilometers east of the Aceh border. Ninety kilometres west of Medan in Bukit lawang.

Sumatra is my favorite place I've visited. Real adventure. My daughter was born 25 years ago in Iboih, Pulau Weh. If your still there Pulau Banyak were some paradise islands off the west coast. We had our own private island with nothing except a well and mosquitos. Was paradise except the mossies Tongging and around there at lake Toba is good also. Blankejeren is a place up in the mountains with pine trees and rice paddies that's known for Ganja. Very beautiful place. Hope to make it back one day.

For Old India Hand a fellow lover of Sumatra.

#1 Iboih, Pulau Weh where my daughter was born in 1993.

#2 Lake Toba about 10 km. from Tongging where we rented a place with no electricity or anything. Toilet in nature. Bottled water and lake as bathtub.

#3 Tongging Lake Toba

#4 Pulau Banyak. Undiscovered tropical island paradises back then. Our hut on our own private island we stayed at for 2 weeks. No electricity only a well for water. Got food delivered every 3-4 days. Stayed 2 weeks. Would have stayed longer as it was tropical bliss but the mossies were evil!

#5 My friend I met in Banda Aceh who was very proud of this family heirloom. It was very old. I forget but maybe 400 years old?

#5 My patches I got when I got drunk with the cops in Kutacane. I was exhausted from a long day and wanted to go to bed but they called me over as they were drunk and I reluctantly obliged. Had a great time joking around with them and on their CB with some other cops somewhere out in the jungle. Good times! Sumatra Rocks!

Some more pics for Old India Hand

#1 The island in the distance is the island we moved to that you could walk around in 15-20 minutes slowly. I walked (to that island) from where the picture was taken where we stayed a few days but moved to the other island because the mosquitoes were horrendous. They weren't much better on the new island.

#2 Some locals near Tongging. Lady holding my daughter.

#3 The place we stayed on Lake Toba for some weeks. Just 2 bare rooms, 50 cents US a day.

#4 Our landscapers in front of our place on Lake Toba.

I love the old Toba pics. At 16 years of age I was playing senior football when taken under the wing by the 36 year old striker of the team, a Londoner who had come overland to Australia in the early seventies. He showed me photos he'd taken during his journey on the hippie trail with his Lake Toba and Sumatra photos affecting me tremendously. The following two years I spent many nights at his place eating sate and sitting in wonder at his slides of his travels. In 1985 at 18 years of age as soon as I was old enough to obtain a passport, I flew to Indonesia for the first time. To this day those photos pawed over on winter nights of Sumatra, India, Iran etc in the striker's flat have left an indelible mark on me as I continue exploring the world.

My last pics of Sumatra as I move on to Penang in a couple of days.

Awesome!

A description of your pics would be nice. Like where were they taken.
