You mean, you stay for free where you volunteer? I suppose that is often offered.

Which field do you want to work in, where and which time period?

I'm leaving tomorrow for India and will be there for six months. I would love to find a school or orphange to volunteer at for two to four weeks. I'm not worried about accomodations but if included that would be nice. Just looking for a place that genuinely need some help. Location isn't important, I can go anywhere. Suggestions?

1. Here is a list of opportunities that offer a stipend along with free lodging (I'd hope - I did not read them all). I am not sure about the legality for you, though, whether you have the right visa, or whether you are an Indian citizen, since you give Delhi as your location

2. An option that I personally know about is to stay as a volunteer at http://buddhagarden.org/
where you are expected to contribute work for 3 hours a day (from 6-9 a.m.) in their organic garden, and in turn can stay for free (except you pay a contribution for the daily organic meals), while in your case if you wish to do more during your day
you could find your way to go here

There are other options I can think of, but they would require a commitment of more than a month. Even some of the professional capacities in the above options require more than that. In one month's time you barely get to know your job, not really sufficient in a complex environment.

3. One option of doing something meaningful, though in a very special way, but totally for free, if you feel that might be something for you, is to take a 10-day course at www.dhamma.org which is also free, and then volunteer at their centers throughout India helping out with other courses. You can only start volunteering though after completing at least one ten-day-course. I know people who travel thru India and never pay a cent for lodging because they either sit or serve another course in another center or stay on in one place to do that. Managing these centers is also done by volunteers.

Just be sure not to say that at immigration in case the officer asks you what you are going to do for 6 months. Volunteers require a special visa.
