Hiya, I am a student in the UK and will be graduating this summer. I have set my heart on spending 1-2 months in India this summer and want to spend a good amount of that volunteering.

I have done my research but a lot of the "more official" ways of volunteering seem to cost a lot before I have even got there.

From speaking to friends, I know that many of those that live in India will have charities that they help/support themselves which are not all over the internet or do not have special programmes for travellers. I would LOVE to come and help at something like this, I am fully happy to pay for everything I need, I would just rather do it when I need to, rather than waving goodbye to wads of cash so early on!

Children/adults/learning/anything! I am keen and want to help!

If anyone has any connections/advice, please let me know.

Many thanks!

Check out http://www.futurehope.net/how-you-ca...volunteer.htmlin Kolkata. They take volunteers without having to pay anything to them. You pay for your flight and they have reduced rate accommodation (shared with other volunteers) that you pay for. You get free food and a doctor on site in case of any illness. You have to pay for bills etc.
They can advise you on visas etc and look after there volunteers extremely well

Hello Low,

Welcome to IndiaMike.

Firstly, we have an obligation to tell you that you cannot legally volunteer on a tourist visa. If you want to be on the right side of the law you will need an employment visa, and to have all arrangements squared away, before you apply for the visa.

Secondly: It's a big country and you need to narrow down the search. Also, be cognisant of the weather conditions when you plan to be in India.

Thirdly: Trawl through these websites:

http://ngovolunteers.com/

http://ladli.org/HELP%20VOLUNTEER.htm

I am volunteering at a orphanage near Vijayawada at the moment and really enjoying it. Its really rural and run by a Christian pastor. Im not religious myself and thats been no problem.

They have 153 children in the orphanage, are building a school, planting gardens, opening a day centre in a nearby village. There are loads of things to get involved with and I received an awesome welcome!

If you want more information you can message me

Hope this is helpful
