Can anyone recommend some above-board and non-fee NGOs in Bangalore (or anywhere in the South or West for that matter) for a volunteering stint?

We're looking for NGOs that can (1) provide room and board - free or sensibly priced, (2) accept a married couple, and (3) don't charge any fee.

We can commit to a 2 month stint this winter for the right organization.

Causes we like: Education, rural development, women's empowerment, and health.

There's so many scams out there that we don't want to land up and get burned. Any counsel or personal stories will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Volunteer South India

I know of an excellent volunteer opportunity in Kerala in a school, but minimum committment is 4 months Oct toFebruary. Not right for you I guess.

It could still work for me for next year. What is the name of the organization and how can I contact them?

I will pm you with more information about the school when I am on the other computer! Do you have any teaching or social work / youth work experience? Or other interests that would be of you in working with young people?

Pm me your email . In the meantime here is a bit more info.. 4 months Oct on. 4hours a day 4days a week. Full accommodation food transport supplied though not fares to India!Free time at weekends. They prefer younger people and couples OK. Winter holiday programme requires some other interest or skill such as sport ,drama, dance but the main focus is speaking English to youngsters who rarely get the chance to hear correct English. There is a module you can use but if you have your own ideas, no problem. They are offering a free 10 day tour of Kerala as a bonus!
No drinking or smoking on site and need to dress appropriately . The kids are very keen to learn . The school is a model school and has some interesting ideas which are then used in other schools.

No you can't. Why can't you share the information here in public so that other members can benefit too?

Numerous organisations in Calcutta that take on volunteers such as the Missionaries Of Charity, Calcutta Rescue and Don Bosco Ashalayam.
They expect you to arrange your own accommodation and most people stay in the Sudder Street area of Calcutta which is very central.
