I'd like to hear from anyone who's done some volunteering in India.
There are soo many different organisations, I'm overwhelmed and need some advice on what organisation is the most trusted, reliable and worthwhile.
My preferences are working with children or in orphanages, care, teaching and crafts. I plan to travel with a friend for a month and then settle in somewhere on my own to volunteer for 2 months.
I would be interested in anything around Kerala, Goa or Southern parts of India.
Keeping all my options open though and would love to hear from anyone whos volunteered in other areas as well.

I've just come back from 4 weeks in Faridabad, just outside of Delhi. I was working with children in the slum schools and orphanages mainly. They also do medical work and women's empowerment projects. It was an amazing experience and it's so great to see the progress the children made even in the short time I was there. I did it for an organisation called Global Orphanage Trust. Feel free to ask me anything you like

Most projects can be booked direct with the organizers in India and therefore you will know anything you pay will be going towards the good causes and not into somebody else's pocket.

Thanks Lauraw!
I had a look at the website for them and they sound quite good. I've also been looking at Sankalp Volunteer Trust. I won't go with any organisation that doesn't have good reviews online.
There's too much to ask!! One main question I've been trying to decide on. Whether to work in slums, child care centre or orphanage.
Any insight into the difference experiences I may have in these different scenarios?

lot's of people go and do voluntary work for the Missionaries Of Charity in Calcutta-ends up being quite a community of volunteers.
you go to the Mother House (after Mother Theresa) on AJC Bose Road and register there.
Calcutta is a great city to live and do voluntary work in.

I went to work in the orphanage but the organisation was flexible so i spent more time in the slum schools. This included the women empowerment programme teaching women how to read and write at the end of the children's school day. I think most organisations will be happy for you to do this, as school is mainly in the morning, and then you can see the orphans in the afternoon. There was also the opportunity for me to see and help in medical clinics, but not being one for gore i politely declined this option.

I found the oprhanage children lovely, but i must admit i preferred the school. They had so much more energy- but it really depends where you go. Honestly, i don't mind answering any questions at all- it was a brilliant experience for me so i'd be happy to talk about it all day!!

I am associated with one ngo(World Without Obstacles) which deals with child education/healthcare,rural development/religious/cultural activities etc.I volunteered for one of its project in Lucknow last Dec for 2 days.It was a event for HIV/General Health awareness and free HIV tests as well in a school. We also organized a rally around the streets.Other than that I usually help out for any planning/research/website related stuff for his projects whenever I get time.

There is a small project which is on its way for which a lady from from Holland is helping out already. This ngo is based in Delhi but its sphere is in north India cities like Lucknow,Ayodhya etc.So you can check the site which we have launched recently with all new structure. http://worldwithoutobstacles.org

You can contact Bharat who runs this ngo(my friend as well) and tell my name and he can let you know if he has any new project.
