I was going to ask the same thing. I'm not sure but I'd be careful if you visit India on a T visa. I've heard (admittedly not sure it's accurate) that you can't volunteer with T visa. It's a shame if true.

One needs an employment visa to volunteer as well. Iirc the earlier posts on the subject.
