If you do a bit more study you will find far more worthy charitable organisations to devote your very brief ( can't do that much in 2 weeks ) stay in Calcutta. Where's the millions if not billions of dollars she raised using her charity as the draw card for the advertising campaign ?----------tucked safely away in the vatican bank.

It is sadly true. From what I have come across, people of Kolkata do not have much regard for the Missionaries of Charity for they can see first hand how little the missionaries actually contributed to the city, and how other organisations have done far more. They also have to thank her for the branding that Kolkata got, as something like a city of gutters, whereas Kolkata is really a beautiful city with a rich and vibrant culture and history. In fact, Kolkata does not even have the largest slums of India. And slums are, after all, by and large the same across the world. Even I had bleak images of Kolkata, before I moved in four years back as I used to equate Kolkata with Mother Teresa. Now I have a very different picture.
And then, there are these snide remarks one gets to hear; about things like the missionaries never having opened a modern hospital where the sick and the old will get real treatment, and things like that. I do not know how true these are.
Well, any way, on the other hand, Mother Teresa has indeed motivated people across the world for selfless service.

Ris, welcome to Indiamike, and India. Hope you have a fulfilling and enjoyable trip.

She could have been " THE " hero of Calcutta, instead they turned her into another religious icon.

Probably because the church had no other religious icons to be show-cased in the 20th century.

They didn't really need to in the 20th century, because although getting very shaky they still had enough moral high ground left to keep the wool covering the eyelids--------but now they are busting their arses to fast track canonizations. Why was the 5 or 7 year rest period before you instigate the road to sainthood disregarded in this case ?

Hi redninja,
I planned to do more than 2 weeks, but unfortunately I don't have that much leave days as I'm still working. So this 2 weeks will be the trial "experience" for me. And maybe next year I will be able to dedicate more time to other organisations.

Thank you Ashya, your explanation of Kolkata made me feel safer. I'm actually abit worried to travel there because of the latest news regarding safety issues in India, but since I've booked my trip since last year I don't want to cancel my trip. I started this thread to find out if there are other people who will be interested to Volunteer in Kolkata, so maybe I'll meet new friends.

But anyways, again thank you so much!
