I must stay in contact and do some occasional data exchanges with my employer while I am in India and since I will be spending most of my time in Varanasi again, I would like recommendations on which card to get.
Two years ago I had a data connection, but was in vacation mode and don't remember how well it really worked. I will be near the river most of the time.
I can't rely on guest house connections via wifi.
Will a sim card work well enough for skype calls ?

Thanks in advance for advice !

Which carrier do you currently have? I have AT&T and am signing up for AT&T Passport service while traveling. It allows for unlimited text, picture, video, some data and if necessary, phone service. It starts at $30 a month.

I was very pleased with it last trip to India and Varanasi.

If AT&T has it I'm sure other carriers have similar programs.

Hi Drews60,

I think the at&t plans only give you a tiny amount of data. If you want to use google maps, look up a lot of things, etc, it's best to get an Indian SIM card. Your phone needs to be unlocked . Last time I had 2 Gigabytes and it was enough.
My concern is the old city of Varanasi, I don't know if the coverage is very good there, near the Ghats. I don't remember seeing any cell towers, but I wasn't looking at tech stuff anyways This time I have to communicate a lot more with work.

Airtel and Vodafone work fine in the old city and the ghats. Both the service providers have 3G network and signal strength is good at all the tourist hot spots where data usage is high for obvious reasons.

If you want to find out about Airtel's 3G data plans then check out this page and fill in any airtel number and email address to go to the next page where they have listed all the top up plans.

It would work out a lot cheaper to use local sim card as opposed to using the one from wherever you come from.

How to get a local sim card? Use the search function and you will see lots of threads on that topics.
