Hello all. I will be in Varanasi next month. I am staying in the old city right next to the river. I was wondering if it was safe to walk around the old city after dark, especially along the ghats?

Thanks.

Along Assi Road, till about 930-10PM is quite busy. The small lanes running parallel, are often dark or, ill-lit.

I spent 2 weeks in Varanasi a couple of years ago and wondered about at all times of the night and day,I never felt threatened once. But I can say that for pretty much everywhere I have been in India. Just use common sense,if it looks, feels dodgy then it probably is.
Take a torch and little cash. You are far more likely to stand in a pile os cow shit than you are be robbed.

@Zazzlethorpe. Is there any particular reason you would want to be out on your own after dark? Are you female? You only need to look at several million threads on the Trip Advisor forum by other tourists asking similar questions (not just for Varanasi). The answer is usually the same 'Don't go out on your own after dark unless you need to'. I wouldn't bother, unless you are with someone. A couple of years ago, I did a night tour with a guide and found the alleyways behind Scindhia Ghat a pain to walk through - much cow poop and many other things to trip you up. The ghats themselves though, I've found are really quiet late at night, but I've never ventured too far away from my hotel (by the river.)

Enjoy your stay

Any time I've been in Varanasi , the only real danger at night is getting lost, I guess this is less likely now with Smartphones.
There is usually some sort of police presence around Manikarnika because of how close the Golden Temple is . And they usually told me to go back to my guest house if they found me out after midnight anyway.
