I will be visiting Varanasi in second week of August. What is the likelihood that local streets will be flooded? Will the ghats be open if there is flooding? Also, any recommendations on where to hire a cab for a day? I plan to visit a couple of ghats, Sarnath etc. Other than preparing for rain, any other suggestions?

It is usually extremely humid during August , so drink plenty of water.

Although I have visited Varanasi, our hotel was outside the main older parts, and we took an auto 3 wheeler part way in to see the river and ghatts.
Walking seems to be the only way to move when close to the river, with narrow alleys, etc.
Depending on where you want to visit, a cab might not be much use?
Do be sure to report back on your interesting sounding trip!

Ed.

If it is not raining heavily there is no chance of the streets to be flooded. The ghats are open 24 hours whether there is flood or drought. You can hire a cab through your hotel itself with prior intimation. The ghats can be visited by foot since they lie one after another since they are on only one side of the Ganges. You can also view the ghats by renting a boat ride which you can do it solo or a shared journey. For visiting Sarnath you have to book a car or an auto.

There is not much you can do for preparation for rain. Just let it pour and give time to let it flow to the drains. Then just enjoy Varanasi. Thanks and a Happy Journey to Varanasi.

We stayed at the Assi ghat. This is the only ghat reachable by car and there are several hotels, ours was Temple on Ganges.

Planning to have a family tour in Varanasi from 11 Aug to 15th Aug. Is it raining heavily there? Want to cover Chunadgarh fort and sarnath in a day. Is that possible?
