i'm planning my first trip to India and the last place to visit on my list is Varansi (Last but not least )
At first i thought about booking a room near assi ghat like temple on ganges.
After some talks with friends and reads in the forums i think near the maint ghats will fit better.
At now i have to decide between the Ganpati Guest House (around 5000INR) or the Palace on Steps (around 3800INR).
Both are with Balcony, Ganpati is nearer the Burning Ghat.

What would you recommend?

Have a nice day

Assi ghat is quite far out, tho I have seen corpses arriving atop 4x4's for cremation.

The area around the main ghat is better for the experience of Benares, the narrow lanes the corpses being taken for burning by relatives ,immersion in Ma Ganga.

Fascinating place

From Assi Ghat to central ghats is just half an hour walking along the riverside.
Mostly it took us much more time since there is so much to see.

Wherever you go, you cannot escape the smell of burning.

Assi ghat is my preference.

Oh. Missed this one. Tim are you still with us? Did you book & go?

Ganpati vs Palace on Steps. I got to stay in both when I couldn't stay at Ganpati for the full duration of my trip to Varanasi a few years back.
I didn't rate Palace on Steps or it's 'fall to your death' balcony and I paid more than your quote, the 'maharaj room' was the same price at Ganpati's premium room = 50.
But Ganpati's side premium rooms (#11 & #14) are even more awesome in my opinion and cost 35(ish).

I think personally, stay on hotel in ghat facing the river is not good idea. One hour after sunrise (7-715? AM) last week was 35C. Our hotel, far from ghat, with room facing East was hot by 9AM. Maybe we cannot afford expose to heat and also dust. If you religious and want ganges then walk from close hotel.
