Hi All

I am planning to visit Varanasi next month. Can anyone suggest, should we opt for online booking of Rudrabhishek Puja? How it is different if I not opt for this booking?

Hi Harish, it all depends on the day you happen to visit the mandir. As you might imagine Shivratri and other days are totally manic.

I was there just last month on the day after Janamashtami and had a reasonably alright darshan. I didn't do the special pooja though, only a basic one.

I have described my recent temple experience in detail in the second post on this thread, Magical Varanasi: http://www.indiamike.com/india/car-m...2/#post1803615 You might wish to have a read.

I am not familiar with how the online booking works for the madir but I do know there's a legion of pandits outside just waiting to take you through your prayers and they will do as you wish. I'd imagine there are special slots for Rudraabhishek and booking in advance might actually be better but can't say for certain.

I would suggest 1) Do darshan 2) sit for couple of minutes there 3) go to pooja booking counter 4) decide / go for rudrabhishek puja in your mind 5) take receipt 6) you will be alloted a padit 7) do as per pandit's instructions

Thanks for reply. Online booking charges for 1 pandit is 190/-. Does it includes puja samagri expenses also or only pandit charges?

As Rudrabhisek Puja is the one performed on PM Modi and being an extensive one ; I guess the charge would be for the priest or priests alone. puja samagri you can buy before entering the temple from private shops which will keep your footwear too!

as far as samagri is concerned, you may take flowers, agarbattis, fruits etc. with you. However, as far as I believe, Pandit will manage the required samagri from there itself. You may give him daxina as per your choice after the completion of pooja.

I had Rudrabhisek Puja done at Pahshupatinath temple in Kathmandu. Priest will ask you how many rudrakhsa you want for the abhishek. They will charge you for each rudraksha. This could end up being a costly exercise. That was in Kathmandu. I am not sure if it is similar in Kashi.

Actually, you can perform rudrabhishek with different pooja samagri for different purposes. Pandit may ask you to do abhishek with different samagris like milk, durva, dangar, rudraksh, rice, bilva etc for different purposes. In pashupatinath, there may be different tradition and thus they demand as per their choice by seeing the pockets. Rudraksh itself is shiva.

You may ask the Pandit at the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir to source all the puja saamagries (materials).
