Hello old and new friends. If everything goes according to plan I will be studying Hindi at the Centre for the Study of Indian Languages and Society in Varanasi in the spring of 2019!

This sort of just happened, I started studiying hindi just for my own sake, and suddenly I'm in the middle of taking a second education i South Asian studies (I am 38...) and a semester in Varanasi is a required part of the course. I LOVE the city, and I am so happy I can't really believe it is happening. But I also have tons of questions.

Accommodation:

The study center offers accommodation in shared appartments near Assi Ghat. It seems like an awesome deal, but I am worried I'll feel old and weird living with 15 year younger students. So I think I'll land on long term stay in a guest house. (January - May)

I normally stay in the Dashashwamedh Ghat area and know it well, but I'll have to find a place around Shivala Ghat/Sonarpura in order to be close to the study center. Any tips for a cheap and fairly clean place around that area that gives discounts for long term stays? The most important thing is that it is run by nice people and that it is cheap (I got unpaid leave from my job, so my budget is limited.)

I'm going there on vacation in three weeks, so I'll have the opportunity to check out a few places.

Love from this very excited Norwegian.

"I normally stay in the Dashashwamedh Ghat area and know it well"...

I am sorry that I can't help with your current question, but if I can turn things around and ask you... Can you recommend a cheap and clean place to stay in the main Ghat Dashashwamedh area?

Best wishes,

Ed.

Hm. Budget places that I can recommend in that area are the Alka hotel (Rs. 900- 6000), and the Ganpati Guest House (1700-6000) at Meer ghat. You have plenty of options way cheaper than these, but they are unfortunately not particularly clean, many of them.

According to relative of ours, who did a stint as a attending physician at a hospital in Benaras; Paying Guest option is very popular amongst single women on short term (year or two) assignments in most second and third tier metropolitan areas.

I've stayed for several weeks in Varanasi at different times in my life, and already know I enjoy it! Not super excited about temperatures in April, but I'll guess it's the price i have to pay for studying in one of my favorite cities. Again, I gladly take any useful tips about the city.

Ok. I got five months leave from my job.
I quit my lease and will soon be out of my apartment.
I passed the Hindi exam that was required to participate in this exchange program. (To be completely honest, I aced it. )
I got admission to the educational institution in Varanasi.
I have a student visa
...and plane tickets.
I have rented a room w/private bathroom in an apartment in Varanasi.
I'll be leaving in 19 days.

Why can I still not believe this is going to happen?
