I shall be back in Goa for 2015 and want to visit Varanasi, Amritsar and Wagah (the Pak border show). I could travel either way first and aware I can fly into Amritsar via Delhi but then wonder what will be the best route and travel option after that. I am familiar with Indian Railways so no fears there but the rail option appears a bit convoluted; perhaps a stay in Lucknow would be useful; any advice?

How many days do you have in mind for this trip.

If i put a say aside to get to Amritsar and maybe visit Wagah that night, then Day 2 is taken up with the Golden Temple with Day 3 moving on toward Varanasi where I think at least three days before thinking of a return to Goa. I wonder about breaking the trip down to Varanasi in Lucknow therefore adding two days.

It looks all-right to me, day 1 depends on your time of arrival. Try also to visit the Durgiana temple in Amritsar.

The train from Varanasi to Goa runs only on Saturday and takes nearly 40 hours.
I think Bhopal is a good destination for a break os some days.

Thanks Vonkla, I have noted your advice on what I take is a second temple other than the 'Golden' so if so that makes Amritsar a fuller attraction. By chance I discovered a person in the dental practice I used today....is from Amritsar! I had discounted Bhopal on the grounds that it was the sight of that horrific accident many years ago having written if off as a purely industrial location; now I shall research that better and give it due consideration. The 40 hour train journey back to Goa is I think 20 too much so will also have to review that.
So far so good, so thanks again.

Despite the title, this thread if Vaibhav contains a lot of reasons to visit Bhopal and the places around.
