Hello everyone.

what is the best way to go from Mandi to Varanasi?

I will be travelling next May in the Himachal pradesh area, but at some point I wold like to go to Varanasi, and if my plans are how I think will be, I will be in Mandi before going to varanasi, I don't know what would be the best way to go there, train, bus, plane... I'm looking for a balance betwen cheap, and confortable.

thank you very much

Take a train from Pathankot Cantt to Varanasi or train from Chandigarh to Varanasi. To get to Pathankot or Chandigarh take a bus from Mandi.

Mandi to Pathankot will take much more time than Mandi to Chandigarh. But on the other hand there are more trains from Pathankot to Varanasi than from Chandigarh. So check railway timetable, if the days and timing from chandigarh suit you. It will be easier as well as cheaper to travel on this route.

You have even more choices of trains when you go from Chandigarh to Ambala by train or bus and take a train to from there.

What are the roads like in the region? (I was driven from Delhi to a place near Palampur a few years ago and the roads weren't great, but damn, travel was so slow)

For a person with time on their hands who loves train travel, a bus/taxi to Joginder Nagar, then a train to Pathankot would be a good option, it offers the least road travel, but would likely be the slowest option.

Joginder Nagar to Pathankot trains.

Pathankot to Varanasi trains. (remember, 2 different stations in Pathankot)

(this next bit may be useful for people wanting to get from the region to Delhi, the links have trains to the nearest important junction, this gets a list of all trains that run from that station, click on each train name to see full timetable)

Another reasonable option (road distance) is Una (timings awful unless travelling on a Thursday), or even Nangal Dam (Kiratpur Sahib may be a better option depending on road distance/quality), both would then need a train from Ambala to Varanasi.

Hoshiarpur is an alternative for getting to Delhi, but no help for Varanasi.

Road travel wise, Jalandhar looks as close as Chandigarh and Pathankot, and has a better selection of trains, but what are the roads like between Mandi and Jalandhar? (2 stations in Jalandhar)

Another option for a scenic train journey is Simla to Kalka, but then you'd need to get a train from Kalka to Ambala for a connecting train to Varanasi.

If thinking of going straight to Chandigarh, I wonder, is Kalka closer, are the roads better? The Chandigarh-Varanasi direct trains are not great, in many cases it may be better to stay in the taxi till Ambala.
