Aipan - a traditional folk art of Kumaon

Aipan is a traditional folk art of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand and is mainly used to decorate doorways and walls around during the festive season by the female members of the family. It is especially done during Diwali and Goverdhan Puja celebrations wherein the main motif depicts Lord Krishna picking up the Goverdhan parbat on his little finger and other traditional motifs of feet of Goddess Laxmi are done. This was usually done during the olden days on traditional mud huts, wherein after cow dung plaster these pictures was made with rice flour paste, but nowadays stickers are used on cement floors and walls. The other motifs like lotus shape etc. are adorned during the festival that is held during the 'Kartik ekadashi' that falls 12 days after Diwali - here is the link to the feature in Hindi - https://www.jagran.com/uttarakhand/n...-18581101.html

Rain, snow likely in hills today
Dehradun: A fresh western disturbance is likely to cause snow in the higher reaches of hilly districts of Uttarakhand for 48 hours starting from Tuesday morning.
The regional meteorological centre predicted that light snowfall is expected in higher reaches of Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh districts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to Bikram Singh, director, Met centre, “High-altitude places in four hill districts might receive light to moderate snow while other places will witness cloudy conditions.” - here is the link to the news -https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/dehradun/rain-snow-likely-in-hills-today/articleshow/66816454.cms

In one of India’s last villages where ice takes form of ‘shivlingas’, proposal to start ‘Adi Amarnath’ yatra
Dehradun: For decades in Niti, one of India’s last villages in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, situated 380 km from the state capital Dehradun, local residents have worshipped ‘shivlingas’ that form when snowfall takes place every winter. The site on a hillside, 3,600 metres above sea level, is revered by residents as ‘Adi Amarnath’ — an ancient form of the self-manifesting shivlinga which is found in Amarnath in Jammu and Kashmir. Now, the local administration has proposed a 22-day yatra to the site along the lines of the Amarnath yatra.
Officials told TOI that the yatra, likely to be held in February 2019, will provide tourism-related livelihood to residents of the village which is just 26 km from the China border. Niti village once had 250 families but only 35 now remain as most people have left in search of better opportunities elsewhere. Until 1962, Kailash Mansarovar yatris also passed through Niti. But after the China-India war, the yatra was halted for a while and when it resumed, the new route was through Dharchula in Pithoragarh.
Deputy director (tourism) Yogendra Kumar Gangwar told TOI that the yatra is likely to start from February 10 on the occasion of Basant Panchami and continue until March 4. - here is the link to the news - https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...w/66816422.cms
