Hi,

I am planning to make a trip to uttarakhand from Kolkata in last week of Nov,2016 . I have almost 10 days of holiday from Howrah to Howrah. I would like to concentrate mainly on Chopta valley and Auli starting from Haridwar. I am requesting you guys to help with valuable information regarding transportation and budget lodging(around Rs.1000/night).I have made a rough plan like below but I have very less information about the availability of transportation. All I know that a bus runs from Haridwar to Joshimath which takes almost 13hrs. I donít want to book a private car for the entire trip though. Please let me know if private car is available from haridwar/rishikesh to chopta valley and from chopta to jashimath and for the return journey. Also please refer if any other places can be covered during this time frame.

Day1: Start from howrah at night
Day2: in train
Day3:stay at haridwar/rishikesh
Day4: heading to Chopta Valley and stay
Day5:stay at Chopta
Day6:Heading towards Auli and stay
Day7:Auli sight seeing
Day8: journey towards haridwar and stay in a good place in between. please suggest
Day9:Haridwar Rail station
Day10: Kolkata

Thanks.

Hi,
Your trip plan looks fine, no need to add more places, it will get congested. But you will lose time if you travel to Chopta by public transport. Are you alone?
First thing, Chopta closes by Oct-end as the Tungnath temple closes by Diwali. So most hotels shut down, not recommended if you are alone.
Optionally, travel first to Auli, take the Vishwanath bus service from haridwar for Joshimath - enquire and book seat on reaching and make sure it ia the genuine one run by TGMOU.
you might have to spend that night at joshimath if bus gets late. There is no public transport to Auli. Your options are Ropeway if its running otherwise book a taxi. Better if you book your hotel in Auli first and request for a pickup.
For Auli your busget of one thousand will be very short as for other places, more than sufficient.
Try replacing Chopta with a destination on the Badrinath-haridwar route as it will save travel time.

1.I will be travelling with my wife and my parents. My father is above 60 years of old which is the reason I wanted to avoid haridwar to jashimath long journey rather taking a break in chopta.
2.If I cannot visit chopta in November then Then I donít know where to spend 2 more days.
3.I am ready to hire private cars for one way single journey. Actually I am reluctant to book for round trip as from my previous experience I have seen that the travel agency forces to stay in a hotel whom they are tagged with.

But now the main concern is chopta valley.

Halt at Pipalkoti. I would advise to book a drop taxi to auli with first night at Pipalkoti. Tell him you have hotels booked already. Pipalkoti has a gmvn TRH.

Try for Uttarkashi or Mussoorie/Dhanolti, or try for Khirsu a small beautiful place just 40kms off Srinagar. But all these places require booked transport.

There is no need to drop Chopta just yet. That late in the season you don't need to book accom in advance anyway, you can get it on the spot. You can call some of the GHs listed on the site (search for contacts) a few days before to check whether they're open. If not, you can still stay at Ukhimath or Dugalbitta. GMVN has a great location at the former.

Hiring point-to-point cars works out more expensive than a car for the whole trip as you'll have to pay for the return empty run each time. There are plenty of people you can hire from without having to stay at their preferred places. It is after all your trip, just be firm on this. You can check with Shubhyatra Travels, Rishikesh (search for contacts), some members have used them to satisfaction. You can also hire from the Haridwar taxi union, they're right outside Haridwar RS. Tel contact also on the site.

Hi Dilliwala and Himahuja ,
I joined this forum today and just like Arka Mishra, I too have a plan to visit Haridwar for 10 days (from 22nd December to 1st January) from Kolkata. Places of Interests are haridwar, rishikesh, devprayag, pauri(as it falls on way to rudraprayag)rudraprayag, ukhima th,joshimath, auli. I also want to visit Chopta but then i noticed that Chopta , at that time may (?) be closed for trekking. Can you suggest me best plan within budget accomodation? I have decided to hire a car throughout my journey.I will be travelling with my parent.

Pauri will be a diversion between Devprayag and Rudraprayag. That's not a disqualifier but rather than there, you could plan for Khirsu nearby. In which case I suggest to drop Ukhimath (Chopta may be inaccessible anyway and GHs will be closed) to avoid big diversions. From there to Joshimath and Auli.

GMVN has GHs at most places which are quite decent, check their website if their rates suit you. Auli is expensive, but dorm accom there is cheap. A more suitable alternative may be to stay at Joshimath and make a day trip to Auli.

Read some more threads on these places and decide where you'd like to stay how long. Generally 2 nights at each place would be ok though.

Thanks Dilliwala, just 2 questions to ask
1)Can i book hotels over the aforesaid mentioned places to stay after reaching that particular place (in case if i opt for not booking prior reservation) . i hope due to offseason , i may get hotels in cheap rate(specifically in rudraprayag and joshimath) .
2)Since i will be hiring a car for the entire 10 days , any well known car agency which i can rely on?;where at times driver can also act as a guide.
How about hiring a car from India Easy Trip Pvt Ltd . I found a decent amount of reviews there.

1) Yes, you can do so on the spot. GMVN has fixed (low season) rates, with others you can negotiate.

2) Talk to Shubhyatra Travels, Rishikesh (search for contacts), some members have used them to satisfaction.
I know nothing about India Easy Trip.

Few days ago , I visited The GMVN tourist information office in Kolkata where i was disheartened to know that from this year , they have made only one flat rate system which will be followed throughout the year. No OnSeason/OffSeason rates will be there. Untill and unless one is going and booking on spot nothing can be known.
