Delh-Gangotri Route Condition

Just returned on 4th October late night from my maiden visit to Gangotri Temple.
Traveled in a small car. Conditions are OK(stones, gravel etc) to good (new tarmac) post Uttarkashi. Delhi to Rishikesh (Modinagar, Merrut and after the end of ‘Toll Road’) seems to have relapsed. Rishikesh to Delhi was much better.

Friends, i am traveling from Ranikhet to Harsil in Nov. Plan is to do Ranikhet- New Tehri on day1, and, onwards to Harsil on day 2. My concern is about day1 , will i be able to do
281 kms from Ranikhet to New Tehri on day 1 comfortably or should i strech it to two days.

You can easily do the route in one day, 'start early' should be your mantra so that you are comfortably at destination for a nice evening tea.
If you find my posts confrontationist, please bear, I am an old frustrated guy who has nothing better to do than sit on rocking chair and curse the world whole day

Hi, Grateful for some ideas on the Delhi-Almora road route options. Planning to do it during the next weekend when I expect crowds from Delhi heading to Nainital. I want to bypass Nainital while going and probably come back through Nainital. Could regular travellers update on road conditions. Also, can we expect some decent accomodation options in Moradabad. Thank you.

The typical option that I know of is to go via Kathgodam-Bhowali. And the other route that I have once taken is via Corbett-Totam.
The former route:
  • 'faster road'
  • crowded at the typical bottlenecks
  • Less distance but more waiting time in jams
  • Not a beautiful road to drive on
The latter route:
  • 'slower road'
  • Not crowded and low traffic
  • More distance but not many jams.
  • Beautiful road to drive on

One may end up taking almost the same time via both routes or marginally different times. Then what does one pick?
  • If I am rushed and want to commute, I shall change my timings by a few hours to beat the rush hour and take the 'fast highway'.
  • If I am not rushed and want to enjoy the journey, I shall take the more relaxing and beautiful route.
“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!”

Thank you for your suggestions. I'm planning to go via Haldwani and return via Nainital, Kaladhungi and Bazpur.

I figured that the alternate route is captured exactly in my Google's location history/timeline. Below is the route on the map. Though as I mentioned before, Google Maps does not show this route for navigation.

Full resolution is available here.

I shared the condition of this route earlier in this thread (see post #3970)

Just back from my home on 28th Jan., 2018 through this route, it is okay with just two small hurdles where roads are being repaired near Totem

If usual = a possible suggestion by Google Maps, then No. It is this one.

If usual = taken by locals, then I don't know.

I was made to believe by 2 local men on bike that I was sent on a route less know. The one in the goo.gl map link above was closed in monsoons, no thanks to landslides.

The link above is the same route that you mentioned earlier. Usual means the one which buses, trucks and passenger vehicles take to reach from Ranikhet to Ramnagar.

I think srb would know. I am still not able to get the the difference between usual route and the one you took, perhaps showing both routes in same image will help, or perhaps both are one and the same route.

Yes, may be the 'usual road' for the local people but Google Maps doesn't show it as a possibility. So outsiders may be at a loss. Hence I am sharing so that we know there is an unlisted-by-Maps road.

Right! I should have done this before. Here: https://goo.gl/maps/ndjVHPMiCh52.

From Chukam to Bhatrojkhan the route listed by Maps is what is called Ranikhet road. Google says there is no route via Bhakra Kote and beyond 'Ajdli Malli'. But I took it and the road is good. May be the usual route for locals too!

The road being mentioned is the one that turns towards Manila initially and little ahead there is a small road that meets up just before Machor on the usual road
