Hello everybody ,as I see this thread is dormant since an year though I have a query which I was banking upon you guys to get it sorted.
We a group of 7 (mixed group) would be heading to garhwal this new year in a hired innova from delhi ,I am listing out the itinerary we have planned

28th Dec:leave delhi by 9pm and reach rishikesh by 4am,a short tea break
Query:AFAIK you can't drive beyond rishikesh before 5am and after 8pm,does it hold true?else ,we can leave delhi a bit earlier and cover more distance in night.

29th Dec : I imagine we will reach sari village (near ukhimath) max by 2pm? Correct me,if wrong. trek to deoriatal and reach there before sunset,I have booked the frh there and also a tent in case we don't fit in the 2 rooms available,I have broken a deal with surendra negi for 700 per head ,accommodation plus food ,is it fair? And is guy reliable?

30th Dec :after witnessing the sunrise ,we plan to trek back to sari and then to chopta by vehicle ? We plan to reach chopta by 10am and start trek to tungnath and as far as possible after that ,back to chopta by 5pm

Query:we wont be staying at chopta as we have to reach auli next day, suggest some place in between chopta and auli which can be covered in max 3 hours for a night halt.I have been fascinated by mohankhal frh near pokhri ,any information ? Or suggest some other place ,should be serene and in nature.

31st Dec:leave (night halt) early morning and reach auli by max 11am ,spend time enjoying snow and skiing ,spend the new years eve celebrating

Query :I will book gmvn if no other better alternative is found (except clifftop ,its out of budget) so suggest some place where we can have party and celebrate new years eve ,party doesn't mean a city party but just bonfire ,little music and dance and a little alcohol won't hurt.

1st Jan:leave for delhi
Please feel free to refine the itinerary and suggest feasibility as we have only handful of days and some of friends travel only once a year so we want to utilise it fully .suggest your points ,possible snow condition ,road closures, any and every point is appreciated ,thanks

How can a thread you just started be dormant? The hazards of copy/paste.

Restrictions on night driving from Rishikesh are correct. May be relaxed in winter though. But you can only find this out on the spot.
Hope you don't face any fog out of Delhi.

No short route from Chopta to Mohankhal. For Auli you'd be better off going to Gopeshwar. That's if the road isn't blocked by snow. Otherwise you'll have to fo the long way back via Rudraprayag.

Yes, considering the road and time of day you should aim not to go beyond Gopeshwar. If you can leave Chopta earlier, that's better. And if you see any decent accom on the way before Gopeshwar, just stop there. No point driving in the dark.

And till how far can we expect to go via rudraprayag to halt for night if the gopeshwar way is snow blocked ?

Rudraprayag itself would be a good place to stop.

Hi! I'm planning on going to Deoriatal in the coming long weekend (24th - 27th December) with 2 office friends.

We'll take a bus from Delhi to Haridwar on 23rd night and reach haridwar by 5-ish. Since we're on a budget, we'll be doing most of the travel by public transport.

We have until the 27th to get back to Delhi, so 24th - 26th to roam around and walk to Tungnath and Deoriatal.

I have a few questions if someone will be kind enough to answer.

Should we aim for Sari Village or Chopta to stay overnight before we leave for Deoriatal?
Would we get a bus to the nearest town to Sari or Chopta from Haridwar early (5-ish) in the morning.
Is it possible to reach the nearest road-head and directly walk to Deoriatal on 24th itself? or would we need to stay overnight?
If we reach the lake by 24th, we will have time on the 25th and 26th to explore Tungnath.
Are there any other short hikes/walks nearby for stunning views and an overall good time.

Please write back if more info is required. This is my first trip to Uttarakhand, so I'm a bit skeptic about reaching towns at odd hours with 2 female friends relying on me!

Anyway, any help will be much appreciated.

Hi auxelvn
Leave little early from delhi ,preferably by 9 (maximum) reach haridwar by 3 30 ,buses start to joshimath from 4 15 ,I am not sure if you can get bus directly upto ukhimath but the joshimath bus will drop you to rudraprayag by 12pm from there u can get bus to ukhimath and from there a taxi perhaps to sari village which I assume u can reach by 3pm and immediately start your trek to deoriatal and if lucky reach just before sunset and spend the night there.u won't have to waste 24th by staying at sari this way
Someone please confirm if he can get a bus directly to ukhimath in early morning from haridwar.
Accommodation in deoriatal contact surendra negi ,hira negi or do a little research you will find their contacts .

Thank you anurags92, for the advice!

I have procured the contact details for Mr. Negi from the forums and have spoken to him for accommodation. He also mentioned that buses to Ukhimath start from 5-ish from Haridwar. Although I'll still try and call the bus stand and confirm since I don't wanna be in a position where I find no bus in the middle of the cold night.

Also, do you know if there will be snow in the last week of December and would we need some snow gear like crampons?
I don't know much about this, but I read somewhere that hiking in snow requires you to have gaitors and snow shoes. I'm not gonna invest in gear if I don't need it right away. I have a pair of Salomon that has worked well for Khirganga and Churdhar. I'm counting on them for Chandrashila as well.

So the tentative plan as of now is to try and reach Deoriatal before sunset on the 24th and then hike towards Tungnath the next day (25th). Also, can we do Tungnath and Charashila the same day? Or would it be too much of a rush?

We can probably start our return on 26th evening and be back in Delhi by Sunday (27th) afternoon.

I went to Deoriatal, Tungnath and Chopta in late December both in 2004 and 2005. On both occasions there was think snow near and above Chopta. You can ask Negi jee if it is snowing there this year as well. Global warming may help you - who knows. You can visit Tungnath and Chandrashila in the same go provide you budget a full day to visit Tungnath and Chandrashila.

Foremost you cant travel in those areas in evening beyond rishikesh there is a restriction on night travel ,you can start your return only in early morning ,max by 6 or 7 (you won't get any bus for haridwar after that ) so plan your return accordingly .
I have no expert idea on snow gears or crampons ,some expert on the forum may better guide you on this ,but in my opinion a nice ,sturdy pair of shoes should do with layer of polythenes over socks.

Snow is unpredictable ,it hasn't snowed yet there but most probably it will before you go ,you will definitely reach tungnath ,chandrashila is no guarantee, try it with a guide and yes it can be completed in a single day ,start the trek early.

Is this the deluxe bus you're thinking of? There should also be one to Rishikesh, from where there are more transport options for Ukhimath.

There's also an ordinary bus from Delhi to Guptkashi which will get you to within 6 km of Ukhimath (Kund). But it'll be a long ride and jolly cold.

Thanks trahul!
I'm guessing we'll find snow near Tungnath. Although I haven't trekked on snow before, but it'll be a nice experience.
I'll still ask Mr. Negi for the same when I take his account details for the advance payment.

I did not know about that restriction, anurags92.
And just to clarify, do you mean that we wont get a bus to Haridwar from Ukhimath after 7 in the morning?!
That's kind of unbelievable!! But in that case, I think we wont have any option but to board a bus before 7, I guess!

A polythene layer on socks is an amazing idea to waterproof one's feet. Thank you for that useful tip!

And since I don't know when I'll go that way again, I think I'll push hard for Chandrashila, if we get a guide. Also it helps that Chandrashila is at 4000m. I've never been higher than 3600m. So I'm excited about this one!!

Anyway, thanks for all the help!

Hi Dilliwala,

I'm counting on the volvo, yes. But since it's a long weekend, I'm guessing we wont get one. I've recently gotten to know about these wonderful apps of car-pooling, but I haven't ever used them to go towards east of Delhi. But let's see.

I can look up details of the Delhi to Guptkashi bus. If it leaves from Kashmere Gate at night, I can probably board it after office on Friday night.
If you know the timings of the bus, that'll be helpful as well. If we go directly to Kund, I think we can reach Deoriatal before sunset for sure.
