Hello friends,
I want to visit Varanasi and nearby beautiful and remarkable places (eastern uttarpradesh) for 5 to 7 days. We will be accompanying a 2 year old infant with us.
Please suggest places to see/stay, itinerary and best months to visit there.
I have thought of a few places, Varanasi, Allahabad, Lucknow, Sarnath, Kushinagar.
Thanks in advance.

autumn and early spring(oct-nov and february) is the best time for varanasi.Summers are very hot, and winters can be too cold for the infant.
There are many trains from Kolkata to Varanasi.Doon express or Vibhuti express would be good.
atleast 2 days you would need for varanasi(kashi viswanath mandir, sankatmochan, durgabari, BHU, and cruise along the Ganges, a walk through the bylanes to enjoy and experience the true city...)
sarnath, chunar fort, and vindhyachal temple can be visited on a day excursion. Allahabad can be done on another day.you can hire cars from varanasi for both as a whole day trip.you can then proceed towards lucknow
which would require another 2 days for sight seeing. From lucknow you can directly take a train to Kolkata.
I haven't been to Kushinagar so cannot comment on that.
Please mention your hotel budget for suggestions on that front

You got my point, I want to get the feel of the ancient and unique city, varanasi. I will sure take your suggestion on strolling and wandering on the ghats and through the by lanes.

Tell me one thing are there any typical sites in Allahabad to visit, or should I skip this and stay 1 day more in Varanasi/Lucknow?

Goutam Budhha breathed his last in Kushinagar. So this place also has a great historical aspect, for that reason I wanted to visit that place.

Anyway, you have given a good idea on this tour, thanks a lot.
After we finalised the places to visit, will think on the hotels/guesthouses. And then will sure knock you.

By the way, have you visited varanasi recently?

I have been to varanasi around 10-12 times, since childhood, my relatives stay there. The last time was february 2013, to attend a marriage. It remains one of my most favourite places in India. So am partial to it for obvious reasons.it has its cons, dirty,chaotic..but it has its charms.if you ask me,anyday i'll add one more day to varanasi. There is never a dearth of activity there, for any no. of days you spend there.

I have been to Allahabad only once, that too on the occassion of mahakumbhamela. So normal sightseeing did not take place.however, I didnot find the city too appealing in comparison to varanasi or lucknow.may be skipped, in my honest opinion, unless you are keen on taking a dip in the sangam

Thank you, I will sKip Allahabad. My itinerary that i have roughly planned may be like this,
Kolkata - Lucknow(1N)
- Varanasi (4N)
(including 1D to Sarnath return to Varanasi,
1D to Kushinagar return to Varanasi,
1D to Ramgarh Fort,Chunar Fort return to Varanasi)

Is this itinerary seems okay? also please suggest a few good hotels to stay for a bengaly
family.
Are there any other places to stay on the way to Sarnath or Chunar Fort etc?

i hope you have atleast 1 full day in lucknow, otherwise you won't be doing justice to the city.

as for accomodation in varanasi, your best bet would be to stay near godowlia crossing. There are also ample no. of hotels overlooking the Ganges, but these are mostly frequented by foreigners. Also, the approach to these hotels are through very narow labyrinthian lanes and may be tough with a kid and luggages.

for clean standard rooms i would recommend hotel Lara India http://hotellaraindia.com/
This is bang on the godowlia crossing.from here the buswanath gully is around 5 mins leisurely walk.have stayed here for a couple of times.Their restaurant is also good(veg)

Alternately if you wish to stay closer to the main ghats and temples, you can choose Dasaswamedh Lodge, just 3 mins walk to the main ghat, and in front of the biswanath gully.this lodge is frequented by bengali families, and has decently clean attatched bath rooms, but very basic.

Their are many other hotels in this area, but the standard of rooms and cleanliness is questionable.
Other IMers from varanasi may also suggest some more.
In sarnath thee a a tourist rest house run by UP tourism apart from pvt hotels, but you realy dont need to stay there. If you start early you can be back by lunch.

I came to see this post when I came across this message of yours in a completely different thread in this forum. But I shall like to add that you may think Sarnath as actually being located in the northern suburb of Benaras city, hardly ten KM from the main railway station, referred as Cant (for cantonment) station by the locals. There is nothing much to see on the road, except for the houses of the locals. crater size potholed roads and Varuna river. And my apology if that river resemble a dirty canal to you, albeit wider. Regarding Chunar fort, I do not remember coming across anything special on that road, worth of paying a visit. The only thing noticeable were few brick kilns. However, I also like to clarify that when I visited it last month I was driving a car and consequently had to pay more attention on the road, rather than on the more distant objects.

Varanasi is that place which can feel when you stay there. I was there for three days and time went quickly. If you interested in Budhism Sarnath is good place and you can stay there otherwise shared auto can take someone in Rs. 20 there. I saw Monks there who look so happy.

For accomodation search online and book according to your budget. Foreigner like to stay near Assi Ghat and you can find them sitting on particular place. One evening I saw a nice dance performance by couple. Ganga Aarti is amazing. Cross Ganaga in Share boat for Rs. 10. Other side Horse riding really good for Rs. 50. Cruise in boat along with ghats so good, on share boat it is only for Rs. 20.
Best Regards,

Thanks rahul4640 for noticing my thread.
thanks surinder too.
If there is nothing more to see on the way, then we can cover Sarnath (north east of varanasi) in one day time and Chunar & Ramnagar fort in another day. And will stay in Varanasi itself for 1 or two more days to get the feel of this unique city.
online booking of hotels is fine, but I wanted to get suggestions from IMers who had been there.

BTW, has anyone visited Chandraprabha wildlife sanctuary, which is only seventy KMs from Benaras? Is it true that it once was a home for Asiatic lions? Any noble person who has actually been there is very much requested to kindly share his experiences.

Aheli, not much to add regarding Varanasi as never been there. However, hotel Lara India at Godhulia Chowk will be the best bet perhaps.

We had a tour to Lucknow once upon a time, so this might be of some help to you.

Can you suggest some good budget hotels/guesthouses on the Ghats in Varanasi, so that the ghats are easily reachable in minimum time at any hour of the day and night?
