Sankisa/Sanikissa/Samkasya/Kapitha in the present day Farrukhabad district is one of the more obscure but important Buddhist pilgrimage spot.
Has anyone been there recently. I will be in Sitapur for a day and have a train to catch from Hardoi in the night. I was wondering if it may be possible to hire a taxi from Sitapur, visit Sankisa and be back to Hardoi by the evening.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

No have not been to Sankisa but I have an interest in Buddhism and have been to Sarnath and would like to know more about Sankisa.

Generally hiring someone to drive you is not a problem if you are willing to pay and yes it should be possible (although very rushed) to drive to Sankisa from Sitapur and then after a couple of hours stay in Sankisa to drive to Hardoi by the evening to catch your train.

Looking at the map, your natural route from Sitapur to Farrukhabad (for Sankisa) should be via Hardoi but I don't see a good road between Hardoi and Farrukhabad probably because of the Ganges river in that area and you have to travel via Shahabad to get to Farrukhabad and then to Mohammadabad on the main road and then a smaller country road to Sankisa and this whole trip could take four hours or more as you will also need to cross the Ganges bridge where delays are possible.

Return trip from Sankisa to Hardoi will take about the same time (maybe 30 minutes less).

Yes, possible if you are able to hit the road early by 8am and then leave Sankissa for Hardoi by 3pm.

OK so I made it to Sankisa twice in 7 months and from two different directions. First from Sitapur and I have blogged about it . The second time I made it from Agra. I personally think that the Agra thing is quite doable. It should take about three hours by road via Shikohabad. However there is almost no public transport in the interiors so I would suggest getting a taxi. I think a round trip by taxi should not cost more than Rs3000.
