I will be driving to Kumaon from Kolkata in November with my wife and 2 year old daughter. Planned route is Kolkata-Allahabad-Lucknow-Sitapur-Bareilly-Haldwani-Nainital.....

I am looking for the status of the road between Lucknow to Bareilly.. I know that till Sitapur its complete and for rest of the section work is going on.. How good or bad is the Sitapur-Bareilly stretch? I also received an alternate route advise which is Sitapur-Lakhimpur-Gola-Pilihibit-Majhola-Sitarganj-Nainital... Any one knows what is the latest condition of this road ?

Thanks

I did this during Summer (late May) and took the standard Lucknow to Bareilly route. As you mentioned - the Lucknow Nainital corridor is complete upto Sitapur. The next 160 Kms till Bareilly is being widened so there are numerous diversions. Shahjahanpur to Barielly section was better than Sitapur to Shahjahanpur. Not sure about the road conditions after monsoons , but it was very much drive-able then and you could easily maintain 70 - 80 kmph . From 10 kms out of Bareilly till near Lalkuan you will get great roads again. Be on the lookout for Haldwani bypass as this will route you away from inside Haldwani - preferred if you are not trying to cross Haldwani town very early or very late.

I did map the other route you mentioned but did not drive on it.

BTW - I drove till Kanpur on NH2 and then onto Lucknow. I was advised not to take the Allahabad Lucknow route as the condition was not good at that time, no idea about the stretch now.

Thank you very much ! In that case, I will explore the possibilities of taking the route through Hardoi till Shajahanpur and then onto Bareilly. Bareilly to Lalkuan is newly opened 4 lane road I believe.. How was the condition between Kanpur - Lucknow ?

My suggestion will be to stick to the main route. Except for the irksome diversions , it was actually better than many roads!

Yes Bareilly to Lalkuan is the all new 4 lane - one caution , when you are returning , it takes quite a juggle (many unmarked turns at that time) to head towards Shahjahanpur again.

Kanpur to Lucknow road is good - traffic is very very heavy and the toll plaza (or lack of it) before entering Lucknow is a big choke point. I crossed it around 5:30 am and even then it was choked.

An unsolicited suggestion - if you have time - try out Ojaswi Resort at Mukteshwar , it is a fantastic property at a great location.

Normally you cannot beat a KMVN location. In this case the KMVN is at a marginally higher altitude. But the way both Ojaswi and KMVN are oriented , both will have similar views. But as a complete package , Ojaswi will be streets ahead , albiet quite a bit costlier than KMVN.

At the Mukteshwar KMVN , they were refurbishing Jim Corbett's bungalow (part of the property) , when finished it should be good as well.
