I'm looking for some hostels around Vrind/Mathura while I'm there for Holi.. any suggestions? Budget with a cool crowd of backpackers.

Mathura is no backpackers' place, and that can also be said about Vrindavan, which is an entirely separate place.

Here is an old list of places in Vrindavan, along with phone numbers, but the prices are not up to date anymore. The "minutes walk from temple" relate to the Iskcon/Hare-Krishna temple, which is outside of the old town. It is in the old town where you want to be, though.

Here is a more recent list (as of 2013), which gives a clearer picture of the prices of a handful of places in Vrindavan, but not of all listed in the first link.

Because these lists can disappear from the web, as websites are remodelled or links break etc, I have copied the first list into this post

It is advisable to go early enough before Holi to Vrindavan, as the place is thronged at the time of the festival itself, and even before.

I suppose you see other threads below this one on your page, some with warnings about things that happen to ladies at that time, and also to male farangs, as they become the preferred target of colour throwing.

Holi is the time when the barriers of not touching others, strangers, breaks down for Indians. So you must expect to be touched by many, not only by men.

Loi Bazar is in the center of the old town. So go for that guesthouse as your first option. (Scroll down on the first list linked).

If already fully booked, ask for a room at this ashram: http://vrindakunja.org/
It could also be your first option, a very nice place, in walking distance to the old temples in town.

It is ideal to follow the beginning of the Holi festivities on the main day of Holi in a large temple compound, because it starts with some ceremonies and chanting of songs which get more and more frantic, normally in the morning of that day around 10 a.m. until the climax around noon. After that, if you like, move out into the streets...
