We are planning to be in Varanasi the last week of October but have just seen news reports about the serious flooding in the past month with most of the ghats buried under silt, and it taking a long time to get cleaned up with continued high Ganges levels. Plus of course considering what new impacts rain from Phaillin may be as it comes inland. Wondering if anyone can give us an update on what the the situation is now - are the ghats still all silted over? And any updates what happens the next few days. (Have posted a similar question in MP threads for Orchha/Bundelkhand, will be there middle of the month in case anyone has current info as have read that also got badly flooded in the past month). Many thanks.

The storm is affecting only the states below uttar pradesh so far, so the rise in river water levels are not because of it. The storm has affected parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha/orissa, and now maybe bihar. All the states are below Uttar pradesh.

Last i read, the status in on the other forum. as of end of september 2013.

still, they are all below the uttar pradesh. and they are not catchment areas for ganga in varanasi, are they?

the flooding was in july-august, not sure of the current status. tried checking the varanasi government related sites and if there were any live webcam feeds, but no luck.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Met other travellers 2 days ago who had been in Varanasi through the Phailin storm - heavy rain and high winds, no boats were operating on the Ganges, and streets were "flowing".
There was no additional flooding at that time but the river was still high and many ghats still covered by silt from the August/September floods. It was possible to move between some ghats but not all. Their hotel on the ghats had been flooded right up through the 2nd floor but was now dry. We'll be there in 3 days, will post an update in case others are wondering.
