Gonna visit A,bad in few days and have few concerns/questions

- is it a safe place, catching a night train etc?
I have heard stories where people ve been victim of theft on the trains. I know this can happen just about anywhere but still?

-- Cheoki railway station -- is it Too far? What transport modes available?
One of my fellow travelers have down reservation from Cheoki, how far is it from the main city, is it too inconvinient. Also, she is female so is it safe is she goes alone in taxi at around 8 o clock at the station in evening?

Hows the city in general as compared to cities like Jaipur/rajasthan? I ve heard its not as safe, is it true then to wht extent?

Never been to Allahabad or UP before so making a bit assumptions here.. Kindly enlighten me!

Regards
I love my city http://Ajmer101.blogspot.com

I'll take this chanche to add a question of my own. Are there any cheap hostels in Allahabad or is it better to visit as a day trip from Varanasi?

priyank, Allahabad, despite being a large city and important religiously, has had little attention on IndiaMike. Ideally, your questions should be answered by a resident of the city or a regular visitor. I have stayed just one night in Allahabad, in late 2009. See remarks and photos elsewhere in IndiaMike.

For a tourist travelling by train it is probably convenient to find a room not too far from Allahabad Junction Station. I stayed on the Civil Lines side but there are possibly more hotels on the other, south, side. I recommend a careful search using Tripadvisor and considering only places that have recent reports.

A search of thorntree comments re Allahabad could also be useful. I have no knowledge of the situation regarding personal security. As an older guy I felt quite safe during daytime.

There are cheap guesthouses/hotels but the really cheap places are likely to be unreviewed in well known websites like Tripadvisor or here in the IM Hotel listings. Some places will accept only Indians. If you are really adventurous you might find a roof in an ashram. I can't endorse this for a solo western traveller considering disappearances in north India in recent times.

You have to do your bit to be safe anywhere and same is true for allahabad. Btw, i am from Allahabad (parents settled there 6 yrs back and hv in and around east UP for all of our life).

To be frank, my parents have reservation about catching a train late in the night from Cheoki railway station. Either you catch the train in allahabad itself or mughalsarai or varanasi. Avoid the smaller stations. I being a male and in mid-30s won't prefer it myself.

Catching a train at ALD railway station isn't as bad. There are ppl always there unless you make it 2 or 3 in the early morning. What class you are planning to travel in? AC coaches are safer and less crowded than SL class bogies.

I haven't been to Jaipur myself but if you know where you are going to, avoid late night trips, mishaps can definitely be avoided.

If you can afford a hotel in civil lines area, stay there. A bit expensive but it'd be worth it and not too far from the station.

TriXal0ne,

varanasi to allahabad can take upto 3hrs by road. so depending on what you want to do in Allahabad, keep 6hrs for travel to-and-fro varanasi. I am really not sure abt economical hostels in allahabad.

Maybe I'll just take a quick stopover on the way to Varnasi
