Trip to Ooty in January End 2015 ! Help Needed !

Hello Friends,

Me and my wife have planned to visit Ooty in January End 2015 for our 2nd Anniversary.

We would be reaching Coimbatore Airport on 22nd Jan at 10:30 AM. We plan to leave for Ooty same day.

Next day, we plan to take the 9am toy train from Ooty to Coonoor, do some sight seeings in Coonoor. Then leave back for Ooty from 4pm Toy train. I will make online bookings for FC class once bookings open.

We would be in Ooty for 2 more days.

Our return flight from Coimbatore is on 26th Jan at 10:35 am.

I have few questions:

1. Is it advisable to hire a cab from Coimbatore airport to Ooty and use the same for complete sight seeing in and around Ooty. Or shall we just hire it till Ooty and then hire another cab for local sight seeing. Which one would be more cheaper?

2. Please provide us with some good sight seeing points in Ooty and Coonoor considering our arrival and departure plan mentioned above.

3. Suggest some good accomodation which is not far from the town, is within 2k per night and from where we could get good views

3. Is it advisable to leave from Ooty early morning on 26th Jan to catch out flight which departs at 10:35 am. Will be too foggy to drive? If no, then what time shall we depart from Ooty?

4. Please add any points that you feel could make our trip enjoyable

Thanks,

1. Hire a car till Ooty and then hire another cab for local sight seeing will be much cheaper.

3. It is recommended to not take risk if your flight is at 10:35. You have to travel approx 100km and it will be too foggy if you leave ooty at very early morning, January! Try to stay in Coimbatore at the last night.

Hi rshalder,
Thanks for your response. Please let me know any cab service provider that you might be aware of and which has reasonable charges.
I would be staying near Botanical Gardens.

Kindly let me know which all places I should cover on the day when we reach Ooty on 22nd Jan. We would be reaching around 1:30 pm.

Also, is there any sight seeing on the way from Coimbatore to Ooty?

Next day (23rd Jan), I plan to visit Avalanche. What all can be covered nearby this point and by when at the earliest shall we leave from our hotel so that we can enjoy fully.

Next day (24th Jan), I have not planned anything yet. Please provide some pointers.

Last Day (25th Jan), will leave Ooty from 9am toy train for Coonoor, do sight seeing, then leave for Coimbatore. Stay overnight

Thanks

You should consider taking the toy train from Mettulapalayum to Ooty. The scenery on the trip is great. It will also be a lot cheaper than taking a cab to Coonoor and faster, depending on your arrival and the train's departure. Try to book toy train tickets in advance, and opt for the first class. The tickets sell out fast and they cram people into the second class chairs, until you regret boarding.

There is an amusement park in Mettupalayam. Black Thunder I think.

Also a Murugan temple at hill top, Maradhumalai I think.

Hi iamgorman,

Actually since we would be reaching Coimbatore airport on 22nd Jan at 10:35 am, therefore we have decided to leave for Ooty by cab so that we don't waste that day and instead go for sight seeing in Ooty.

The train from Mettulapalayum to Ooty runs only once in the morning at 7:10 am. Hence, we plan to enjoy the toy train from Ooty to Coonoor on 25th Jan. I would definitely book the FC tickets the moment booking opens for that day :)

Thanks

Hi Aarosh,
We do not plan to go to the amusement park as it might take up our entire day. Will surely add the temple in our itinerary.
On 24th Jan, we plan to visit the points that are far from the city such as Avalanche. Kindly suggest which other points are nearby which we can cover.

Also, I have heard that to enjoy the safari, one should try and reach by 8:30-9 am so as to avoid the crowd. Please confirm the same.

Thanks

HI Arpit,

Yes even i have read in all these forums that for avalanche you need to reach early to beat the rush.

Regarding your points :

1. Is it advisable to hire a cab from Coimbatore airport to Ooty and use the same for complete sight seeing in and around Ooty. Or shall we just hire it till Ooty and then hire another cab for local sight seeing. Which one would be more cheaper?

Yes your timing is such that you don't need to waste time at MTP directly take a cab from CJB airport and proceed for ooty.

2. Please provide us with some good sight seeing points in Ooty and Coonoor considering our arrival and departure plan mentioned above.

Check from tripadvisor and read reviews judge accordingly.

3. Suggest some good accomodation which is not far from the town, is within 2k per night and from where we could get good views

Ample of options for this one.I india is li'll bit outside but with an amazing view.Check on hotel booking websites.
One near botanical garden has #1 rating in tripadvisor is in your budget too.( don't remember the name)

3. Is it advisable to leave from Ooty early morning on 26th Jan to catch out flight which departs at 10:35 am. Will be too foggy to drive? If no, then what time shall we depart from Ooty?

No not at all.
Leave a day before and stay at CJB

4. Please add any points that you feel could make our trip enjoyable

I could only say even i 'm planning to go around same time a month before so with same kind of many queries.( some answered some not)
Even i'm planning to visit Avalanche - let's c what all people have written is it true or what :)
I am having a doubt regarding Toy train tickets as it is very difficult to take them.
I checked today and they are all full with 2 waiting instantly for FC for post 2 months travel.I wish we are among few lucky one's :)

Hi All,

I have prepared a rough itinerary for Ooty trip. Please let me know if it is feasible and if the points are worth visiting:

Day 1: Reach Coimabtore Airport at 10:35 am. Will hire a cab and reach Ooty most probably by 2 pm. Have lunch. Will be staying near Ooty Lake.

Plan to visit Botanical gardens and St. Stephen's Church.

Day 2: Plan to visit Doddabetta Peak and Doddabetta Tea Museum and Factory. In the evening, plan to visit Ooty lake

Day 3: Plan to reach Avalanche by 9 am to avoid the rush. Then take a tour by the Forest Department Bus through the Sanctuary Avalanche and visit Upper Bhawani Lake.
This should take about 2-3 hours.

Day 4: Leave for Coonoor by 9am Toy train from Ooty. Sight seeing in Coonoor. Then leave for Coimbatore and stay overnight.

Day 5: Leave for Coimbatore airport

Few queries that I have is:

1. I plan to visit Shooting point also. However, I am not able to find where is the exact location. Could someone kindly let me know if it is worth visiting and if yes, then on which day, according to my itinerary, should I cover it?

2. Is Pykara Lake and Emerald lake worth visiting considering I am already visiting Upper Bhawani Lake. Also, if I am not wrong, Pykara Lake is on a completely different route.

Thanks

Hi Arpit,

Your itineary seems ok .
Good to go.

1.)Shooting spots are in the way of Pykara lake.
2.) Even i was in a mood of excluding that place but i read each and every review about pykara lake in tripadvisor and found that everyone has mentioned it to be a picturesque place with amazing nature around as i am a nature and photography lover so i included this one also in my itineary to take some superb shots out there.

Regarding train tickets i re checked today if you get tickets booked online between 8:00 - 8:20 then we are getting seats in FC else waiting afterwards. - Just a tip :)

It would be better if you could have visited earlier than me - my queries would have been answered.
as i want to do my trip exactly as i plan it. :)

We'll still you have a lot of time keep planning
for sure i'll be writing a travelouge once i complete my journey!!

Hi nipurn.says,

I also heard from some other forum that Pykara lake is worth going. So I have now decided to visit it on Day 2 after covering Doddabetta Peak.

Thanks man for the tip for train booking :)

haha..Rather I would now be waiting for your travelogue for any last minute changes in my itinerary :D

Also, 23rd Jan is our anniversary [happy]. I am planning to have Candle Light dinner at Taj Savoy (upon request). Any idea if they do arrange the same? If they do, then will it be worth it in the cold nights?

Or if you or anyone else reading my post are aware of any other place where we can have Candle Light dinner?

Thanks,

Hi Arpit,

That's a cool idea!!
Will check for myself too if budget allows n weather ofcourse

Regarding restaurants also i have worked upon in past months will share you details in some time.

I have currently below queries , hope someone can help me ::

1. When booking for Toy train in FC do we need to select Lower birth or coupe or cabin ? or selecting lower birth is ok. What kind of seating system is in FC, anyone can brief over this.
Do we get instant seat number in PNR after booking from IRCTC ?

2. Is there any restaurants near Nanda lodge,MTP ? for food options etc. and advice needed regarding train journey from MTP to UAM - that do we need to carry snacks, food etc with us for this long journey as i have read we don't get much on stations on way.

3. will Heavy woolen be required or normal woolen jackets would do in train or at ooty in december ?

4. To visit local sight seeing places how to proceed about ? i understand from various reviews that as usual in all hill stations there will be many local tour agents etc. but do suggest me will it be okay budget wise to book their packages or if i go individually to each place by a cab/auto will that be ok ? i want a confirmation on latter one.
for eg - if day 1 i go to Doddabetta peak day 2 - i go to avalanche then will i easily get a cab/auto or will they lure to take full package ? as i dont want to rush from one point to other but enjoy my time as planned.

Hi Nipurn,

Hope you must have planned your trip by now :)

I wanted to ask if you have booked your toy train tickets??
While booking, there are 4 options under preference. Are you aware which one is the best one for great views while coming from ooty to coonoor.

Thanks,
Arpit
