Recent Trip to Ooty - Dec 2014
Landed at Coimbatore Airport at around 08:25pm night – grabbed our baggage and enquired at the taxi counter within arrival zone of airport
They charged Rs 1300/- for the indigo- cab to Mettupalayam but considering the night time we opted for the same.
However I did even inquired the rate outside and no one was ready in less than Rs 1000/- so it was ok considering reliability & safety factor as the road to Mettupalayam was quite empty in night time
We did reached Mettupalayam around 10:20 pm and checked in at Nanda Lodge
It was a decent lodge just on the main highway road for quick access.
Rooms were decent enough for a night’s stay.
Although railway station was very near from the place but we took auto as were short of time and it charged us about Rs 40/- for a 2 minute ride.
Toy train was waiting for us at the station with all passengers rushing up to TT in charge.
My tickets were waitlisted at the time of booking in FC ( still had an another option of 2S confirmed tickets)
However a day before I got a message from IRCTC that waitlisted tickets have been confirmed and luckily I got FC seats that too in first cabin which had the amazing views ( feeling of as if you are driving the train)
Way was full of small/big waterfalls in between and toy train was stopping in b/w at stations on way and before a tunnel for passengers to take photos and enjoy the nature.
I remember one station in b/w which has lot of monkeys so keep all eatables hidden as monkey did came inside our cabin and took of the eatables of a child :P
The views you get to see are huge nilgiri mountains covered with greenery all around, coffee/tea plantations, ooty road alongside and pleasant weather.
The toy train takes about 5 hrs for onward journey and it’s a pleasant ride to enjoy.
Once we reached ooty the weather was sunny , though auto persons charged Rs 50 for a very smaller distance( minimum fare I suppose)
We started for Ooty lake at around 3:30 PM same day which was about 20 minutes walk from hotel.
Walk was quite a long but refreshing in such a nice weather and road nearby lake is silent with a pavement to walk on
Ooty lake Is a happening place with people all around , it has 3 boat systems ( pedal boat, row, motor)
Pedal one the cheapest at Rs 120/- per person and the time limit of 20 minutes
You need to come back within 20 minutes else they will not return your security money ( Rs 120/- ) hence in total they charge Rs 240/- per person out of which 120 is refundable if you come within 20 minutes of ride time extending to grace period of 5mintutes
After which they will not return your money.
Though it was a very pleasant boat ride and the evening weather was too good for ride which made us go far in water and the moment we realized that it’s only 5 minutes left now we hurried to go back to boat stand
But inspite of all our effort we were unable to reach since wind was pushing us backside we literally got tired pushing the pedals ( but somehow I managed ) and did collected my amount back.
Entry ticket for the same is Rs10/- per person – camera etc – 20/-
However no one checks camera etc so you can avoid paying the same.
It has a food zone,horror house,few shops,corn shop etc.,train ride
Outside of lake there is a small market kind of setup selling small souvenirs, caps, fruits, clothes etc.
Next morning we started of early around 9:30 AM for our trip to several attraction points ( as part of a packaged tour) which was only Rs 175/- per person
It covered Lake pykara, pykara falls,9th mile, rose garden, pine forest, dam etc.which were very scenic places in all
Other day we went on a similar packaged tour to spots in coonoor, HP flim studio view, mayur tea estates, singar estates view etc. it also costed 175/-
Next day destination was Avalanche Eco tour – taxi costed us Rs 1600/- for to and fro journey
It was a nice jungle ride , emrald dam view on view was scenic and Upper Bhavani was truly awsum sopt to be at even for sometime.
We also saw bhavani temple on way as a part of eco tour , road inside jungle is bumpy but still manageable.
Concluding I could say that Ooty is truly a photogenic place – don’t forget to take your camera’s,extra SD cards etc to capture all life moments spent

hai nipun sir thanks for the detailed report,we have the plan to visit ooty and mudumalai on coming summer vacation, how you booked the toy train ticket ,if any travel agency is there or through online booking? and also i need the information about the low budget hotels in ooty
Hi manjushadas,
I had booked toy train tickets via irctc website only
Even you can book the same by registering at the website.
Check for MTP- UAM code on irctc
Well regarding hotels there are plenty number of options available in ooty
You can check from any travel website offering low rates on hotels and decide accordingly
As i understand that it would be kind of peak season for ooty so rates may vary!!
