The Sim's Park is a very nice place in Coonoor.
If you can hire a vehicle then on the way back towards Ooty you can visit Lamb's rock, Dolphin's nose etc.
So early morning Ooty to Coonoor - By Toy train and return to Ooty by hired vehichle to cover most of the sightseeing points.
I guess Mettupalayam is on a different route.

The route of the train is Ooty - Coonoor - Mettupalayam. It runs once a day in each direction. From Ooty to Coonoor it starts at 2 o'clock, see here and from Coonoor to Ooty around 10.30 so this difficult to combine with a daytrip.
Consider to go from Bangalore to Coonoor, stay there and visit Ooty the second day.
In Mettupalayam there is not much to see or do.

I agree, not much to see in Mettapulayem. But the best part of the toy train journey is from Mettapulayem to Coonoor. This part is done using the steam loco and they change to a diesel loco at Coonoor. If possible do the morning train from Mettapulayem to at least Coonoor. Make sure you book as early as possible as the tickets go quickly. cheers. Zamba.

Read http://www.indiamike.com/india/tamil...l-09-a-t78719/ for more information on places to see in Ooty and Coonoor.

Apart from Black Thunder there is nothing much to see in Mettupalayam. It is well known as the rail head for the toy train.
