Hi there,

We will be in Southern India in September of this year. As usual we want to do too much in too little time. :-) We have planned our trip to include a visit to Ooty.
We have two questions for the experienced traveller...:

* How long is Ooty worth staying at?
We are flying to Mumbai and on to Coimbatore, take a taxi or bus (??) to Mettupalayam and then the next morning the "toy train" to Ooty. We expect to arrive around noon. Who can give us reasons to spend 24 or even 48 hours in Ooty? What makes it a good (or not) place to stay? (Why) is it (too) touristy?

* How to travel on from Ooty to Cochin?
We understand doing the train trip up the mountain is great, but going back the same way, isn't that just a repeat of moves? We were thinking: to leave Ooty we might take a bus or taxi (??) accross the mountains (??) to Nilambur and take the evening train from there to Cochin. Maybe you have alternative suggestions: Calicut? Shoranur Junction? Which routes are most scenic? Which are easiest to negotiate by (public) road transport? Or should we just go back to Coimbatore and take the train from there?

Any suggestions much appreciated!

There are regular buses from Coimbatoire. From the railway station to the bus-stand was about 40 minutes.
From there it is another hour to Mettupalayam.

We took the train up to Coonoor. The afternoon we wandered around in Upper Coonoor. Next day we hired a car for a trip to several sights and tea plantations. All together this was nice.

There are some places around Ooty like Valparai, Topslip, Coonoor and Avalanche which makes Ooty and around good enough for 4 days.

Ooty is also some of the highest elevation outside of the Himalayas so it is the cleanest air

If you dont mind a bit of a walk stay out of town.

I stay at http://www.palvesugavasam.com/ 1 KM from the bus stand nice and quiet
