Hi,

I'm going to visit OOTY in Mid of august 2013 with my family. This is 1st time where i'm going with my family and would to to visit Eemerald lake( DAM), Avalance lake . Also want to see Upper Bavani if possible.

But i dont know how can i get the permission to visit these place and not going to stay there. Could any one please tell me the contact details for permission.

- Is it possible to get over Phone call or online?
- Or else, do i need to go directly to get the permisson on the same day or few days before the trip ?

Seeking your suggestion. Thanks!!!

Forest Office (DFO) in Ooty, very near the Collectorate. Get permission the day before (make sure its a working day). Phone call or Online is not possible.

Thanks Greenears for your valuable info!!

Have few more queries..

- i know that we need to get permission for avalanche. do we need this permission for Eemerald lame(DAM) also..?
- Actually, i ll be reaching on 15th Aug'13 only (Govt., Holiday) and returning back on 17th Aug'13 @ 2.00PM. So i have only one full day(16th Aug) and not sure about to get the permission on same day visit. is it possible ?? Will they give?
- or else, is it possible to get through any agent in ooty?

Seeking your suggestion !!

- I'm not sure about Emerald lake - you might have to.

- Your itinerary makes things difficult I have to say. To get permission done and go visiting on the same day is impossible and might waste your time. I would suggest that you rather pick places that you can go to without permissions for this trip and set off early in the morning on the full day that you have (16th August).

- Don't think this is possible through an agent.

Sorry to tag along in this thread. Is 2nd Saturday a govt holiday in Tamil Nadu (It is a holiday here in Karnataka for all govt offices on 2nd Saturday of the month). I am traveling on 11th of May and returning on 14th of May. I essentially have 12th and 13th for sight seeing. If 11th is not a holiday for DFO, ooty, i plan to get the permissions on that day and visit Avalanche, emarald and Upper bhavani on 12th or 13th.

I go to Emerald and Avalanche on a regular basis and I have never gotten permission. I just turn up and walk.

However, of late the forest officials have been VERY sensitive - stupidly so because of fire and wild animal risk. There has been a major drought in Ooty and we are very short of water. The number of tourists arriving has really been crippling the water supply further and we are struggling.

It depends on what happens with the water supply. There have been a few showers lately so hopefully the water reserves will regenerate. I just got back from Avalanche this morning and the reservoir is basically empty.

I think you will be lucky to get permission at the moment but we'll have to see what happens with the water supply. To the best of my knowledge you can't do it online or by phone. With Avalanche you may just want to book a trip through Destiny farmstay (http://www.littlearth.in/destiny/experience.php). It's quite expensive and I've never gone there (I pass it regularly, however) but people say it is good.
