Hello All,

First of all thank you for this wonderful forum. I am Anoop working here at Calicut. I have been planning an Ooty trip for a long time. I have finally decided to make it happen on 23rd of this month. Me, wife and our 4year old child will be heading towards Ooty on early morning and will return on 24th Afternoon. Since the distance from Calicut to Ooty is about 150KMs, We will be travelling in our car 'Alto'.

1. I would like to know is it safe to drive to Ooty? I will be driving in the early morning to reach Ooty as early as possible.
2. Best place to have Breakfast on the way to Ooty.
3. Places in Ooty We can cover on 23rd.
4. Best place to have lunch.
5. Where to stay? budget upto Rs. 1200/- (but looking for cheaper than this )
6. Places to cover on 24th.

Please help me with my queries..

No safety issues on the route. Roads are pretty good too. Take NH212 towards Wayanad and take the right fork at Chundale (about 10 kms or so before Kalpetta). At Gudalur take the right turn that leads to Ooty.

You'll have two sections of mountain roads - the Thamarassery churam about 45 kms from Calicut and then the ghat section between Gudalur and Ooty. Roads at both these sections are quite wide, and as long as you stick to the standard rules of mountain driving (drive in low gear, don't ride the brakes while coming down etc), there shouldn't be a safety issue.

2. Best place to have Breakfast on the way to Ooty.
No first hand information, but remember seeing a couple of hotels between Lakkidi and Chundale that looked quite decent. Meppadi , Vaduvanchal and Gudalur may have OK ones, but nothing fancy. If breakfast at a good restaurant is important, you could go till Kalpetta town (about 10 kms past Chundale on NH212) and take the Kalpetta-Meppady road to rejoin the Ooty highway. Will add about 7-8 kms to the distance, but you'd have a pretty wide selection of restaurants.

3. Places in Ooty We can cover on 23rd.
Depends on what kind of places you'd like to visit. The "standard" tourist circuit in Ooty would cover the Botanical Gardens, the Lake and Doddabetta, and it may be possible to cover all three on the same day if you're in a hurry. But beware, all these places are likely to be very crowded since 23rd and 24th are holidays. Less crowded would be places that are slightly away from town (like say Coonoor, Avalanche / Emerald lakes etc).

4. Best place to have lunch.
The best place for lunch in Ooty is Hotel Nahar - close to Charing Cross (right in the center of town). But expect quite a crowd there as well.

Check out the YWCA Anandagiri. http://www.ywcaagooty.com/index.html

6. Places to cover on 24th.
Paikara lake would be an obvious choice (can be covered on your way back since it is on the Ooty-Gudalur route). You could perhaps move some of the places that I mentioned earlier to the second day so as to avoid rushing through visits.

Thank you Cynic for replying all my queries..
Unfortunately YWCA don't have any rooms available now. Since 23rd and 24th are holidays It'll be difficult to get rooms. However I've booked a double deluxe room at Vinayaka Inn through makemytrip.com. I found mixed review about Vinayaka Inn. Since we only need a single day of stay (that too for night only) won't mind if they don't have hotel facility there.

Price for Double deluxe room:

Number of travelers: 3 Adults, 1 Child

788+350(Extra Bed) = Rs.1,138/day
Taxes & Service Fees = Rs.114
E-Coupon Discount = Rs.125 (Which I found via googling)

So, The final price for 1 day = Rs.1,127

I have decided to have lunch from Nahar only.
Will post reviews on Vinayaka Inn and Nahar hotel once I am back.

Hello Friends,

I am back after my Ooty trip. I must tell you that Ooty is a must see place in India. Even though my trip was just for two days, We had a good time there. As I promised here is my review on Vinayaka Inn and Hotel Nahar.

Vinayaka Inn

Vinayaka Inn is located very near to Botanical garden. The room I booked was Double deluxe and had to wait for 30 minutes to get it ready for us.
Room: Clean and perfect for a budget around Rs.1000
Toilet: Clean and enough space.
Bed: They changed the bed sheets and provided a cleaner one.
Food: We only had vegetable food and it was really good. (we had only Dinner from vinayaka)
Hot water: available only from 8AM (we checked out at 9AM, so can't comment on how long it'll be available)
Parking: Its about 100mt away from Vinayaka and is an open space. nothing special to mention about it.

Hotel Nahar
Hotel Nahar is located in a crowded place and very difficult to get a parking there. So we skipped Nahar on 23rd (first day). But had lunch on 24th from there. Food was nice but I think everyone is having their food from Nahar only. Each and every table was full and we had to wait to get our turn. So if you are in a hurry, better avoid Nahar.

Here is a quick price of food Items.

Meals: Rs.100
Fried rice/noodles: Starts from Rs.150
Everything else: above Rs.150

You can also find Dominos Pizza near to Nahar. So if you like pizzas there is an option too.

Now about the Sites I have visited.

On 23rd,
1. Botanical garden
2. Doddabetta (Had lunch from top there is one tea stall at the peak and you'll get fried Rice/Noodles/Vada/Cutlet etc at reasonable price. It was tasty too)
3. Tea factory
4. Lake (Never go for boating. Most of them are in worst condition and the attitude of those guys were pathetic. I cancelled boating after seeing those boats and collected my money back)

On 24th, we went to coonoor
1. Tea estate
2. Dolphin's nose (Never ever miss this place)
3. Shooting spot.
4. Pykara lake.

Things you should buy from Ooty
1. Home made Chocolate
2. Tea from tea factory.

We went to all these places in our alto and I must say Roads are very well maintained and fun to drive.

If you guys have anything to ask about the places I have visited, Please feel free.. I'll try to answer according to my travel experience.

Unhappy Gudalur-Ooty Drive

Dear,
I am from Manjeri of Malappuram dt. Untilnow I didnít travel to Ooty even it is near to me. Any way on February 14th 2012 we (me & wife only) wish to travel to Ooty as our honeymoon trip. I hope we can enjoy there. I have few doubts & tensions on my travel, which are
1. Iím not an expert driver & I didnít drive through passes but I drive a lot in highways. So is it difficult to drive in Gudalur-Ooty highway as it is a mountain road? Is it very steep?
2. Is there any security issues when we travel alone , is there any police aid posts or check points if we need assistance?
Expecting an early reply from you allÖ
Thank you

Manjeri to Ooty is a straight forward drive, the roads are quite decent, and the route doesn't pass through any deserted areas where assistance is difficult to find.

You do have to pass through two ghat sections though - the first one from Vazhikkadavu (a little after Nilambur) to Nadugani near Gudalur, and the second one is the climb from Gudalur to Ooty. Both are quite easy to traverse and not too steep (unlike the Masinagudi-Ooty climb which is very steep).

I haven't travelled on these two stretches for quite a while now, but from what I heard from other travellers who covered these routes recently the roads are quite good except for a few rough patches on the Nadugani ghats.

You don't have to be an expert driver. The road is pretty fine and we didn't face any issue at all. We had really enjoyed our drive through fogs . There is one check post, and you have to pay Rs.20 there. Most of the time you won't be alone, there will be lots of other travelers on the way.

My suggestions:
1. Do service your vehicle 1 week before going for a long drive. 1 week period is to fix any issues that the service people failed to check.
2. Check and fix all electrical issues in car ()
3. Book you room in advance.
4. Try to have Veg. food while traveling.
5. Try to take GPS device with you. - (We used our android mobile for GPS tracking and the google map in it helped us alot)

Happy traveling mate... Do update your experience!
