I'm planning my first ever Himalayan trek and have no idea where to begin. I'll be going with a friend. We are both currently living in south India. So, we have no problem coming to Delhi and other areas in the north to start the trek. Can anyone give us recommendations on the following:

1) We want to trek for at least 7 days starting around Aug. 10th (dates are flexible)
2) Trek should be about moderate difficulty
3) Somewhere where it won't be raining constantly during this time
4) Need a guided tour preferably with a few other people since we are just 2 members
5) Some ideas we had were: Ladakh/Leh, Uttarkashi/Gohmuk to Badrinath
6) We don't have any tents, etc. Can we rent them through a tour group once we arrive there?
7) Would love to experience local villages and customs during the trek
7) Last, we want our breath to be taken away!

Thanks!

Ladakh, Lahaul and Spiti are the only regions where it does not rain (rains very little) ... the areas being in the rain shadow region.

There are a couple of popular treks just outside Leh for seven days.

Read the "Trekking meetups" sub forum under this Trekking forum. You could join a group going somewhere.

I hope you are doing some brisk walking for 90 mins every day before embarking on your first trek...

Dear Avvid Trekker

Thank you for your response. My friend and I are planning to start the trek anywhere around Aug. 15th. We will take a train to New Delhi. We have a bungalow to stay at in Uttar Kashi (a friend's) but it is not necessary that we go there. I have a few more questions for you:

1) If we make Uttar Kashi our hub, once we get there, can we at that point plan for a trek. Or do you recommend we fix something before we arrive? Can you recommend someone there to guide us?

2) Other option is to do a trek near Ladakh. How can we plan for this? Should we take a packaged tour and book it now on the internet? Can you recommend something? There is one website I saw called leh ladakh india dot com. Is this a reputable source?

Any references you can provide would be great. Basically we are looking for anywhere between a 7 - 14 day trek.

Thanks
Sheela

Uttarkashi is a good hub for starting.

You can go to Dodital and cross over the Darwa Top to Hanuman Chatti and Yamunotri. Other treks also possible.

Many agents arrange such trips in Uttarkashi. Provide yourself an extra day there to enquire and make arrangements.
