Hi

I am planning to go in sept end kalpeswar to rudranath to sagar.
I am 65 years and have done quite a bit if trekking.

Is guide necessary? Any night stay options in kalgot and toli bugyal? I will not be carrying sleeping bag.

Also which is comparatively easy with night stop in mind
A sagar panar rudranath panar dumak kalpeswar or
B kalpeswar dumak panar rudranath panar sagar.

I dont have any time frame. I have all the time.

Thank you for any info on this

Without sleeping bag Sagar > Panar route is preferable. Though it is steep very basic staying options are available at phung bugyal(4km)Moolkhrak(8)Litty bugyal(9)Panar(11).

Dumak to panar in a day is difficult. Shepherd hut in Toli. In season you can stay with them if required.
Kalgot is a village, staying option should be available.

Guide not required if you have some experience.

Don't miss to see the face of Rudranath. They remove the mask only for few minutes in the morning.
If possible try to visit Anusuya temple with Atri muni cave.

Panar to Toli is a walk in dense forest with not very well-marked trail, and it's easy to get lost once in a while (especially if like me, you're looking for "obvious" short-cuts) as there are lots of trails used by cattle who spend the summer in Toli and walk up and down the hill face to Panar every day. Good thing is almost all trails start from some point in Panar Bugyal, and end up in Toli Bugyal, but have varying degree of easiness and length. If you have a good sense of direction, there's nothing to worry. Stick to any prominent trail, and it'll be okay.

Other than this stretch, trail is prominent and can't get lost unless one wants to

From Kalgot there are 3 trails. Left one goes to Bansinarayan, right one goes to near Pipalkoti, the middle one goes to Kalgot pass for urgam valley(Debagram/Kalpeswar). Ask someone if you are alone.

In a clear day you can see the Dumak side from Panar. But in bad weather it is better to walk with someone.

If you take someone, can try the direct route to Dumak from Rudranath bypassing Panar,Toli.

One seasonal Dhaba at Panar. Beautiful place but possibility of getting a porter is nearly nil. Talk to Dhaba beforehand.

Sagar to Panar is laborious. Without porter luggage should be as minimum as possible.

Yes we can break before Panar. Next day the walk from Panar to Rudranath is easy and beautiful.

Nearly 14 years before We started from Sagar at 10-15 am reached Litty bugyal at 3-30 . After tea break we started at 16-00 pm and reached Panar at 17-00 pm. We were carrying very little luggage. One porter with us carrying sleeping bag and ration. But now it may be 3 hours more for me.

If you reached Goundar to Madmaheswar in a day with luggage then Panar can be reached on time.

Thank you anirban.. i had gone through that report. The only worrying factor for me is night spending possibility at toli bugyal without sleeping bag. What is the present scenario at toli bugyal in 2018 any probablity of dhaba or accomodation there?

Toli Bugyal has a family of shepherds staying for the summer - they don't prefer taking guests, but will let you stay if you're only 1 or 2 people - they don't have space for more, although have enough blankets.
There's another dilapidated shepherd hut, with half broken door and roof and an eerie atmosphere. But you'd need your sleeping bag to stay.
There's no other accommodation. Not many pilgrims take this route, only locals from this side, so there's not much development.

Kalgoth has a couple of lodges with decent rooms, toilets and even buttermilk
If you want to ease up Rudranath - Kalgoth, can think about staying at Panar and do a day round-trip to Rudranath. Stay all day at Rudranath, and back to Panar by sunset.
But even Rudranath - Kalgoth in a day is quite doable if you start early. It's all flat/ down except for last 1 hour steep climb from the river to village.
