A surprising Move -
Mahendra Singh Dhoni retires from test cricket in midst of a series!
It is a surprising move, as generally no players take retirement in mid series, unless injury or any charge...

As mentioned in an another thread the only surprise for me is that it is from immediate effect. I think criticism from the 4th estate and former players played a huge hand in this decision.
I think its a shocking development. He has so much left in him by way of cricket. He also brings balance to the team.
Hmmm - Daal me kuch kala hai (black spots in a yellow lentil
)

Aarosh I know he hasnt retired from all forms but I still agree with Cank. It was my first reaction - shayad poori daal hi kali hai (maybe the entire daal is black).

Official Version
Official Version (of BCCI) is:
"One of India's greatest Test captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the test rankings, MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket," the BCCI has said.
"BCCI, while respecting the decision of MS Dhoni to retire from Test cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India."
Overall, Dhoni played 90 Tests in a career that began in 2005 and scored 4876 runs at an average of 38, with a high score of 224 against Australia in Chennai in 2013.
As a wicketkeeper, he effected 294 dismissals, the fifth highest in Test cricket.

Reason: To add Dhoni's Test career Record
End of an era. Yeah a decade counts as an era in some cases!
