Nice to see a couple of Indian players breaking out into the bigger world of football, I hope it works out for them!

I'm afraid considerations other than mere footballing ability might be involved in this! In 1999 Baichung Bhutia, the Indian football icon, became the first Indian player to be signed up abroad, by Bury F.C., a 2nd div. club in England where he spent his time pretty much as a bench warmer. He was seen as someone to help win the hearts of the local south-Asian community. He later failed to win contracts with a few higher profile English clubs.

This, when Bhutia possessed loads more ability than Sunil Chhetri, the better-known of the above two players. Chhetri returned last year himself, from a very short, unsuccessful stint with an MLS team in the US (he made no appearances for the club). He has also gone for several unsuccessful trials with teams abroad. He's hyped up much beyond his ability warrants, and is not in the same league as Bhutia.

You've got it spot on. Rangers are in desperate financial trouble and are frantically find ways to raise money or find backers. I think that they are hoping to find somebody like the Venkys with a lot more money than knowledge of football.
