I can see both sides of the argument and they are both valid.

Sometimes I feel that commercialization of cricket has led to greater financial stakes which in turn has usurped the gentlemanly game of cricket. Umpires are human and make a judgment call - mistakes can and will happen - the advent of TV, instant replay and the like has taken away the "fun" of the sport. Just like the amount of body protection worn by batsmen - like gladiators of the Roman era.

Cheers

but nevermind,With deliveries from Fast bowlers reaching speeds of 140kph - 150kph + I feel the wearing of protective equipment is Justified.See link

Maybe also the Ego & IQ levels of fast Bowlers plays a part in this.

I do find it Humourous when a batsman ferioucsly straight drives a fast bowler and the ball whistles past the Bowlers head,
Especially when the ball goes back at the same speed or faster.
More often than not that sometimes nearly cleans up the Umpire at
the Bowlers end much to the Amuzement of Spectators.

I don't think that the fast bowlers are necessarily bowling faster nowadays. In the 70's & 80's Australia & Windies had a bunch of them and this was true earlier as well with England. The batsmen were more skillful in negotiating them.

I had read something very interesting on this though can not now recollect exactly where - but it may be an interview with Fred Truman/Jeff Thompson long back.

The fast bowler said that nowadays the speed is measured when the bowler is releasing the ball from his hand while at their time (Truman/Thomspon) it was measured when the ball used to reach the batsmen. So he pointed out, statistically, today's fast bowlers are faster (by a fraction perhaps).

Quality of the bowlers/batsmen of different era is altogether a separate discussion, in my personal opinion.
