Hi all,

I am relatively new in this forum, so kindly pardon any mistakes that I make.

I wanted your help in organizing my first trip to Sikkim.

The details:

Dates: 12th Jan 2018 to 17th Jan 2018
No. of People: 4(2 couples)
Mode of transport: Self-driven car from Bagdogra(Ford Ecosport)

Planned Itinerary(So far):

12th Jan- Land in Bagdogra at 3pm and drive to Sikkim( which route is preferable)
13th Jan- See the sights around Gangtok and stay in Gangtok(recommendations on sites)
14th Jan- Head to Pelling and stay in Pelling(recommendations on sites)
15th Jan- Sightseeing in and around Pelling and head back to Gangtok
16th Jan- From Gangtok go to Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and head to Zuluk and stay in Zuluk(any other places we can cover enroute)
17th Jan- Do a little sightseeing and head back to Bagdogra from Zuluk and catch flight at 4pm.

Points to consider:

We can substitute Pelling for another, more interesting place(suggestions).

One of our travel companion is going to join us on 13th, so we have to be in the vicinity of Gangtok during that time.

Add-on information we want help with:

Looking for accommodation recommendations for Pelling and Zuluk.

Looking for restaurant/dhaba recommendations everywhere(Non-veg food preferred)

Gangtok to Zuluk via the silk route is one of the most beautiful and historical roads in Sikkim but unfortunately chances of the road being open during that time is very slim.

For couples, Rinchenpong would the perfect place instead of Pelling. It is a nice, secluded mountain hamlet providing mesmerising Kanchenjungha views. But if you people want luxury then it's best to ignore this and stick to your plan.

Thanks for the quick response.

The silk route was supposed to be the prime focus of our trip. I have read some travelogues with people traveling during winter months. Hence, we planned for it. Do you recommend that we should skip Pelling altogether and try the silk route? That will give us an additional 2 days buffer for landslides or road delays?

I would personally prefer Rinchenpong but one of the members of our group recently had a surgery done and won't be able to trek or walk too much. So, we are planning to cover as much as we can by vehicle.

2 days more in silk route would be perfect. But I would suggest you to go to zuluk from Siliguri via rongli as permits can be taken from rongli. You can also try your luck in gnathang valley too if the roads are open. We took the risk last year and it was a journey to remember. But chances of the road remaining open is low but if open then worth the stay.

Can we get the permits from Gangtok as well? We have to start our journey from Gangtok as one of our companions is joining us a day later and Gangtok seems to be the most logical meeting point for its connectivity.

Gnathang valley seems interesting. About the roads, aren't they maintained by BRO? I have read they are pretty efficient and clear up road blockades in a day or two.

As far as I know permits are issued only from rongli. But I could be wrong. It's best to verify before travelling.

The roads open in 2-3 days if there is no steady snowfall. If there is then it will be impossible to travel beyond zuluk from rongli.

Just completed 3N4D Silk route trip i.e. Icchegaon-Zuluk-Aritar on 04.01.18 and enjoyed the scenic beauty very much. Our tour organiser was Travel Funda and the arrangement i.e. homestays, cars made by them are too good.

Also one can arrange their tour plan by contacting homestays directly which will reduce their expenses. One of our Car owner-cum-driver Mr Purva (responsible gentleman) who is also running a homestay and his charges are found competitive than other.

Just came back from my trip to Sikkim.

Some insights from the trip-

  • Gangtok traffic means you have to add at least 2-3 hours for sightseeing in places in and around Gangtok.
  • It is very difficult to obtain permits for out-of-state self-drive private cars from Gangtok and impossible for out-of-state commercial and zoom cars if you are planning to drive to restricted areas.
  • For Zuluk, permits are more easily obtained from Rongli, if a local travel agency gives an 'authorisation letter' bearing all responsibility for the vehicle and the passengers.
  • The locals are very friendly and hospitable and often ready to help but not all of them.
  • Dilmaya resort though very highly rated and much reviewed was not how we expected both in terms of hospitality and help regarding the permit mentioned above.
  • Some repair work is going on on the road leading up from Zuluk at the time of our visit, so there could be delays anywhere from 1hr to 3 hrs.

@renownedalmond: How did you book Dilmaya? One of my friends wants to visit Zuluk in April. He has spoken to Spring Vale Resorts office in Cal, and they said that the Retreat can be booked only as part of a complete package tour!!!!
