Well i know this topic is being discussed in another thread..But I am starting another one. Basically i am getting the impression, best to keep away from the festivities of Holi...But here is my situation....

We are going to visit a friend whom lives in Betim...staying about 10km from where he lives... on the beach..Now, i have been keeping in contact with our friend and he is very excited about us coming..We met him while in Kerala last year...Anyhow...he has specifically invited us to his village on Holi and said that it is good fun and we will love it...

But after all the horrible stuff i am reading, i am kinda getting worried as to if we should go..Yet i don't want to hurt him and his families feelings by not attending...Is it really that bad?...

Or is it just in the big cites that you really have to watch out???
Just not sure what to do...

You will be fine in the villages. It is only in the cities where you will have a problem. another thing to keep in mind is that the Holi celebrations are only between around 8am to 2 pm. After lunch everybody takes bath and that is the end of the colour throwing.

yup, in villages it usually is not a problem as everybody knows everybody so you shouldn't get into any trouble. Also usually women in villages are fierce so a shout at the top of lungs is enough to disperse the troublemakers & the women do come to help. This is from personal experience. Another thing that u said we so I'm guessing it's 2 of u which is always safer, better. Whatever, don't get seperated & enjoy the bhaang. If the people are fun crazy u & they can really have fun. Sure, it has a downside but the upside is roaring. U remember for years a special holi. Hope u have a good time.

it all depends, I've had experiences of being totally on a high like an idiot(owl perched on a tree) was there on a tree. Imagine seeing an 80 kg 5'6 inch be-spectacled indian guy, totally gone. Very amusing as I got some pics. later. You can become loony. On the other hand there have been instances where even 10 glasses or something doesn't get u anywhere.
From personal experience bhang is more potent in the north than anywhere else. If the people are good then u can really have a whale of time. Bhang can also lead to some powerful spiritual journeys (similar to some drugs but without the addiction part) so can be used as a tool too. If u're going to be on your own or not sure than just enjoy the fun from the side. See people make a loony/fun of themselves. Sometimes u can participate by just being there Hope it turns out cool for u.
