I am an Indian , an educated Indian, wants to work in India for India, while searching for Job in Govt
sect recently I saw an opportunity in Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd..I was shocked to see a
notification that states -"Knowledge of Kannada is a must. (The candidate should be able to Read, Speak,
Understand and Write in Kannada)."
I can't understand why the government is applying these rules? BMRC is a Joint Venture of Govt. of India
& Govt. of Karnataka, so why govt. of India is also accepting these? Does the efficiency of a engineer
will increase if he/she have knowledge of a certain language? Is it fair to analyze a person's ability by
understanding of regional language? Lot of people working in Bangalore are from different parts of the
country. They are performing extraordinary well without knowing Kannada. Why then have these guys
blinded themselves to the fact that these sort of rules are discriminatory!
I wanna resolve this issue. Have also posted this question on other forums like Jaago Re as well. Do
let me know your views, and when this issue has enough support lets wake the Govt up to justify this
injustice!

Hi Vishnu,

I can understand the pulse of your blood while reading this....but unfortunately such practices are in place almost everywhere and to a extent is acceptable. What is the kind of jon you were exactly planning to apply in BMRC.The state govt does this to have a portion of quota for the states.A karnataka domicile is fine, but language of Kannada is too much.Again it depends on the type of job as a franchise for transportation and alike will involve locals and then language becomes a absolute necessity...

and a final question..
is it just a language based job which is discriminatory in India?....???

Sorry to disappoint the OP, but is this thread relevant on IM?. I do understand that the site isn't necessarily confined to travel related information, but this thread should be under "Regional Annoyances in India" and not under "Scams and Annoyances in India".

Btw, i don't see an issue in "Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd" expecting the applicant to have the knowledge of local language.I assume it is a local government corporation(and not some private corporate). Its not discrimination but preference for locals, which in my opinion is fair.My 2 cents.

Mine too. If the job requires dealing with people who speak Kannada only then yes, indeed, the efficiency of the engineer will be reduced if he can't. Maybe you'd find it hard to get a job in a Bangalore tea shop too!

No, I don't think it is. Thing is, it is not so much the relevance that matters. The forum is self-regulating in that respect, as threads quickly become history. It is the fact that nobody who has any power or influence in this area is likely to see the post. Wrong audience: a letter to the newspaper might be more appropriate.

By the way everyone would be up in arms if this requirement were to made for Marathi in Mumbai. Different standards in Mumbai compared to rest of the country.

most, if not all jobs in the municipality, and others - which require a working knowledge of marathi - are posts held by maharashtrians.
so please get your perspective right - shilpakm
besides bombay, was and is the hub of economic india... or did that fact escape you as well ?

IT jobs [amongst others] in bangalore are full up with folks with from all over india.

it'd be a tad idiotic of me to apply for... lets say, an NGO job in maharashtra where i'd have to deal with locals and insist i'm being discriminated against - because they cannot understand either english and/or bengali.

just this morning - i was having a conversation with a lad who wished to sit for the IPO entrance exam.
but like he said - 'i must learn hindi - then my chances are that much better, than knowing just the southern languages '.

a lil common sense would help. just a lil.

I was in Mumbai - just two years or so ago - when Union thugs, led by by Raj Thackeray's MNS supporters - attacked Railways examination candidates from Bihar.

India may be one Republic - but contained within it are many 'countries'!

Hey, Brishti joined in... not at all appropriate to use the word ugly!

The OP's specific situation just doesn't seem relevant to this forum --- but there are some takers for almost every conversation!

It would. We have sympathisers with all sorts of unlikely causes here

Agreed! but me thinks this will lead to a detour(which already happened with the entry of Mr.Thackray's name) and few other retaliatory names of individuals/organizations may/would come up and we'll end up discussing something totally different.you know it all..what say?
