Hiya,

I was in Varanassi last year. I spent a week there with my younger sister then a few days alone. While I did find Varanassi to be quite full on I enjoyed my time there and at no time felt under threat. I also was nervous about visiting as I'd heard lots of worrying stories. To be honest I was pleasantly surprised by how well I coped there. I think the stories and my own worrying were much worse than the reality.
As everywhere in India I'd advise you to dress sensibly. I was recommended a rickshaw driver by some other girls I'd met there and used the same man for the duration of my stay, this made me feel a bit safer.
If you are still wary you'll meet loads of fellow travelers around who I'm sure you could see the sights with.

Its a beautiful city, I'm sure you'll be fine.
Take care.
Enjoy your trip.

Yes, Varanasi is intense; it's a pilgrimage town, and people are being their most Hindu selves. And there is an entire class of people who want to sell you something for 'way more than it's worth.

And it's a fascinating place; layers and layers of humanity, all buzzing around doing their collective and individual things.

You probably will find someone to hang out with. I always felt safe in the daytime, but liked company at night.
