At Fatehpur Sikri I was hassled by a little boy who wanted my used ticket for the ASI site.

I would have wondered why, but for the fact that I'd been the first customer that day and neither I nor the ticket office clerk had any change. I'd overpaid, and he had written '50 rupees change' on the back of the ticket for me.

When I handed the ticket to the guard for the stub to be torn off, I was handed back a ticket that *didn't* have the annotation on the back. I protested, and soon got the correct ticket back.

What was going on here?

The way it works is simple. The little boy sells his used tickets to the guard. The guard holds them in his hand, then when you come with your nice new untorn ticket, he turns away from you, and instead of tearing the stub off your ticket, he tucks your intact ticket away and hands you one of the old ones. Then he can resell the intact ticket. I subsequently watched a couple of transactions and I'm pretty sure that was what was going on.

Problem; ASI doesn't get any money from you. So your money is not going to the upkeep of the archaeological site.

I came across this here, and also at Sarnath where an official looking chap told me I had to hand him my ticket to be allowed out of the site. I simply said "Tough, I can't find it," and walked past.

I now tear my tickets up once I'm away from the site. If I'm going to pay to get in, I want ASI to get the money, not scam merchants.

The ticket office clerk, by the way, was completely on the level, and as soon as he saw my face a few hours later had the 50 rupees in his hand ready to give to me.

Thanks for posting this. This is the first time I've heard about it.

I was also told once that I had to hand someone my ticket in order to leave. I wondered what was going on, as that was not a usual request. I keep my tickets for souvenirs, so I didn't give it to him. I said I lost it. Of course, I was allowed to leave.

Now that I know why they wanted the ticket, I'm glad I didn't give it away. Absolutely, I want ASI to have my money.

For Indian Sarnath ticket is only for Rs. 5, may be these people only try to get ticket from Foreign nationals.

Were you approached by anyone claiming to sell you tickets before you reached the counter?, If not, then the ticket office clerk is not on the level. He's the only man who is authorised to sell tickets. Ergo, he's the only man who can buy up the used tickets to resell.

Happened to my guests at Safdarjung Tomb also. The guard himself asked for their used tickets back (not my Rs.5 ticket, of course). I told the guard to shove his lathi up his ass.

Local bus conductors inside the city used to do this, but this was a long time ago. then the wise heads got wiser, and started pirinting serial numbers on the tickets themselves, and introducted some check points, where conductors were forced to write all the numbers of the tickets sold upto that point.

And to keep them honest, they would do random checking....

all new scams are old scams in new clothing.

PS : I always claim souvenir priviledges with all tickets i buy. Either that, or a claim of reimbursement from my office requires the original ticket.

I seem to remember a number of people trying to sell me tickets on the street in Fatehpur Sikri. Also trying to sell me tickets for the mosque, which is free to enter!

You should print a set of tickets with "Enter 1(one) to Norwich Cathedral" written on them and offer to swop them for one of the tickets offered to you.

Do you really think ASI get the ticket money?
Do you really think ASI do upkeep of archaeological sites?

Would have loved to see the guards face and response after that retort
