Hi this is my first post so sad that it relates to theft but I feel people should be wary. I am partially at fault for letting my guard down and only realizing yesterday that money was missing. I am not after sympathy just telling you my experience.

We booked a trek through r.k. Tour a travels in rishikesh they are right next door to bhandari Swiss cottage guest house where we stayed. No problem with the price, trek tour and guide / driver.

At some point during this us$600 was removed from a money belt in my day pack. This money was not for India use so I only Checked it periodically. It was for when we go to Myanmar in 3 months or so. The thief left all the 10,5 and 1 dollar bills so when I moved the money belt it fell right it’s the 50 and 20 that have been taken.

This happened 2 weeks back and as I say it’s only now I am in bundi checking cash etc that I realise what’s happened. Very frustrating and I guess the old sneak theft, probably on the last day whilst your guard is down.

Anyway my trip will go on, I guess the hard lessons learnt are always carry cash on you, I know seems obvious now. And check money stashes even if it feels like it’s there, to my complete shock yesterday I found that sometimes it ain’t.

Cheers Guernsey.

Sorry about your loss. It is good that you posted - hopefully it will serve as a warning to others. Except that it does not apply only to trekking in Uttarakhand, but to travel ANYWHERE.

Having said that, everyone needs to be extra vigilant when travelling in India. There are too many sharks in the water, and letting your guard down for a moment can have unpleasant consequences.

India is a great country to travel in - as I hope you have discovered - but it has its downside as well.

Recently, I stumbled upon this article about theft. Happened to a seemingly seasons traveler! Shit happens. I'm sorry you had to face this side of traveling in India.

Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!
