I also use paid establishments for my shoes, but I wear custom orthotics ($1000) and I, sometimes carry them -- orthotics only -- with me in my pack. These orthotics are made of plastic (not leather) and I can't afford to lose'em. This I do only at places where there is no licensed shoe place. Even if there is a official place, sometimes coupon 6 could be mistaken for coupon 9. I never did lose my shoes but I know several people who did. Some places you find beggars safe keeping shoes which I don't trust; those times I usually leave my shoes with a well established shop-keeper.
