My favorites in India are:
The pregnant woman scam need money for taxi, doctor, etc.
Stranded need money. One fine individual spoke such fine English and wove such a great story for an hour I gave him money for the romance and effort.
No need for a receipt...but there is.
The phony scale still at entrance of even the new airport in Delhi.
But, mostly there is no major impact in India unless...
someone's personal vice (criminality) enters into the equation..

A new scam coming up around the world. When would it touch India or has it already?

Heard of this scam coming out of Philippines. This is not new. It must have hit India by now.

SUCKER! :D

I was approached today in Panjim by a scammer, first time in 13 trips. The stranded story.

A man came up to me and being the street smart Chicago gal that I am I was instantly wary and I move away to keep my personal space. In fact, I kinda dance around so as not to stay in one spot so I can't be easily grabbed. My spidey sense also scans around for other people.

He asked if I spoke English, he spoke excellent English and was well dressed. He said he was from Dhaka and he has no money because his atm card won't work. I said, why don't you call your bank? He said he did and they told him it was the strip on his card and that he should go to his embassy. He pulled a card out of shirt pocket, but didn't show me the front, could have been a credit card.

He tells me he needs money for the train to get to Delhi to his embassy. He pulled out what he claimed was a train schedule and once again did not show me the front of it.

Now my brain is yelling SCAM and he tells me he'll give me his watch for some money. Told him I didn't have any money as I walk away fast.

An hour later I see him with another Westerner, guy with a backpack. Goa rickshaws have solid doors and windows so I couldn't yell SCAMMER! as I flew by.

Wonder if backpack guy has a new watch. ;)

(I've seen the same scam pulled in Chicago near the train stations -- well dressed guy, no money to catch a train outta town.)

And I am wondering whether that western guy has a shell of a watch without the machinery inside.
I got conned with this in 2005 in delhi. A guy claimed that he was the victim of an immigration racket. Came from Punjab to catch the mastermind. Got mugged up, beaten, arrested and what not. He even gave a phone number to establish his story which was answered by his 'mom' who said he is in delhi. Off course he had requested me to keep his plight away from her.
Being a broke low paid accounts trainee at that time, I offered him my entire saving of 200 Rs along with my bank details. Off course that was the last I saw of that money. And when I called his 'mom' from different numbers over a period of 3 months she still claimed that Sonny boy is in delhi.
But now when approached with a similar request I ask them to get money in my paytm wallet.

Here is a website exclusively devoted to Travel Scams

Some of them are exaggerated fears, and some are plain false. But rest are on the mark. I suspect many are user contributed tall tales.
