We posted this in scams and annoyances because, well, it always was in the past: that is, simply getting a taxi at the airport. You would get both scammed and annoyed! But having flown in and out of the Delhi Domestic Terminals several times in the last few weeks, we are thrilled to report that the Airport Authority has FINALLY got their act together. Nothing could be easier. You go to the pre-paid booth, well marked, and tell them where you are going. Pay. It's cheap: just under rs 300 to Karol Bagh for example. They give you a slip in duplicate. It has a number on it. You go outside, following the signs. They are obvious. Taxis are parked in well marked parking "slots" with tall signage bearing a number. You go to your number. The guy is happy to see you. You show him or give him one of the slips. There are parking attendants supervising all this. As your driver exits he must stop and show one of the slips to the police. The police write down his taxi number, your name and your destination. He does not get paid until after his trip, and he must have one of the slips you were given in order to get paid. So you are pretty well assured of getting exactly where you are going. (Which doesn't mean he'll know the exact location of your hotel; there is no way every driver can know the location of every hotel in Old/New Delhi and Gurgaon!) If there is any complaint against him, he will not be allowed to serve the airport in the future.

Random taxi wallahs are no longer allowed anywhere close to the exit of the arrivals hall.

It's been a long time coming.
Reject violence.

Its NOT the Airport Authority but the Delhi International Airport Limited. Its a bit amusing that you can notice so much but not notice the name of the private operator!!
SMASH!!!!

Last week they put me in the taxi with the wrong number. The driver was not impressed when he discovered this at the destination- and nobody told me that there was a number I had to find at the taxi area.

Overall, I did not find any improvement- even though I never found the old system bad anyway. Certainly not astonishing improvements.

I have noticed small changes for the better, certainly nothing astonishing. There has been a prepaid booth for decades, and then you get into a taxi. Big deal.

It is true that there are fewer touts and hangers-on. The new domestic terminals are better organized although the baggage belt area was extremely crowded, they made it too small.

I also thought the driver was polite and smiled and didn't ask for a tip. Could have been just this driver though.

They have started clubbing two flights, at least, per conveyor belt at many airports to save money.

I just took a prepaid taxi from the domestic airport in Delhi yesterday. Same or similar system to before, but now they write a parking place number by hand on your printed slip.

The only problem was that the driver of the taxi in the parking place marked on my slip stood around asking where I and the next people with the same number going, and pretending the driver couldn't be found. When I left to tell the police booth that the driver couldn't be found, that driver suddenly accepted another passenger but when I came back and argued (backed up by the guy who had come after me), he jumped in alone and drove away.

I'll repeat my usual warning about prepaid taxis in Delhi. They sometimes try a scam on new travelers, where they pretend your hotel is full or inaccessible or burned down, and then they take you to another hotel or to a scam "tourist information agency."

If the driver asks if you have a reservation at your hotel, your correct answer is "My friend / husband has a room there already and is waiting for me." Do not let the driver call your hotel for you, because they will only call their accomplice instead, who is part of the scam.

Which is why I keep suggesting the prepaid RADIO TAXIS to users - EasyCabs / Meru cabs.

The cheaper black/yellow cabs are a lottery.

I called the three radio cab numbers last night in Delhi. The first said the number is disconnected. The second and thrid both put me on hold for 7 or 15 minutes (with a detailed hold message and music) and then finally cut me off. So I have not been able to use the famous radio cabs successfully.

The phone numbers are busy.

but at the terminal you have clear well marked counters with visible signage. since your post says "from the domestic airport"

Well the prepaid voucher already has a component of "gratuity" on it.
