Im thinking of hiring a driver and going from Jaisalmer to Jodphur over a day one way. Would it be possible to see Phalodi and Osian on the way?

Any recommendations for drivers or companies? Also what would be a rough fair price for this?

FYI the reason for stopping at Phalodi is for the cranes at Khichan

Hi JC.

Which car & driver? Trip Advisor might be you best (& worst) bet for finding a reputable one, but I'd go for a reputable tour agency over an actual car+driver hanging about outside your hotel.

Use TA's Thing's to do in xxxxx section and scroll down the listing. You'll find tons of tour operators in there. Note you don't need to use a tour agency in Jaisalmer or Jodhpur (one from Delhi or Jaipur would be my pick). Choose a few, contact them to get a few quotes (I took half a dozen, they were roughly priced the same), read some reviews about the companies - watching out for fakes etc..

Speaking of TA, don't bother asking for recommendations on the forum over there, you won't get any replies... except in your PM inbox which you really want to ignore (or report).

You can ask your driver to go where you want, this is your trip, but perhaps discuss beforehand with him any little detours

Take a train, break journey in Falodi, see morning feeding of cranes, and take later train to Jodhpur.

For a day hire of a car we mostly ask the staff of our hotel to arrange this and that works fine.
Since we did several days about our Jaisalmer Jodhpur trip we used the services of Rajput adventures a small Jodhpur based agency. We were happy with them.

Jaislamer to Khichan is over 2.5 hours drive so you have to start early.
At sunrise, around 7 AM, the cranes gather at a field out of the village and start to eat. An hour later they fly to the old feeding spot inside the village.
We saw the notes of the man who observes them and they are rather punctual.
Around nine the birds go to their final destination on the other side of the village.

For more details see the Rajasthan journal in my signature.
