Hi,

I am based in Delhi and planning to Visit Amritsar with my wife. I will be weekend trip (Start on Saturday Morning and back by Sunday evening).

Do I go for a package or just reach there and plan accordingly? WHich on will be cheaper and more convenient? Any suggestion on hotels to stay and taxi services if i plan not to choose package.

Also, need help with must visit places and eateries to visit?

I hope I will be able to cover most of the places in these two days.

A detailed help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Umed

Umed,

Welcome to IndiaMike.

How and at what time do you plan to travel? How long will you actually have in Amritsar? What is your budget for accommodation?

Must visit places: Golden Temple / Jallinwallah Bagh / Durgiana Temple / Wagah Border Ceremony

Eat: The Crystal Palace / Brother's Dhaba
Gone.

Thanks for your reply:

I am planning a visit next month. 2nd week on Jan.

I am planning to leave on Saturday morning (by train) and stay for one night in a decent hotel. Planning to catch a train late in the evening on Sunday.

Finding Crystal Palace and brothers Dhaba is easy enough?

Regards,
Umed

Early morning train from delhi and evening train from Amritsar while returning will serve the purpose of this trip. Try to book shatabdi express both ways as they are fast. On Saturday evening, visit wagah border and on Sunday, do local sightseeing in Amritsar.

IRCTC is offering a package aprox 5500 per person. So its going to cost me 11K . They will arrange hotel, food sight seeing. Etc. Is this package worth?

I am looking at doing a similar trip. Booking fast train there - getting a trip to wagah border and then seeing golden temple following day and fast train back again. Not thought of where to stay yet though,

Pilgrims accomodation is available at the Temple complex.
They also have seperate accomodation for NRI's and foreign tourists.
not sure if you can book in advance or you turn up on the day.
great experience living next to the Temple and seeing the opening and closing ceremonies.

You can easily do it under 10k if you do it on your own.

Finding a hotel to stay at Amritsar (that too near Golden Temple) is easy job, but you should first try to find accommodation at Golden Temple sarais by contacting at reception. It will be cheaper.

Instead of depending on a package tour, one should always do self arrangement.

How soon in advance would you need to contact the temple to stay in the pilgrims accomodation? Has anyone done this before, is it safe - especially for lone traveller female. Is there a curfew at night?

Fing Fang,

To my knowledge (and according to the website) there is no advance booking possible.

If you can escape the dormitory the private rooms look more like cells.

The booking is done on the spot on First Come First Serve basis. I have done it several time. There is a separate complex for the foreigners and NRIs.

There is no curfew imposed at Amritsar.

No, I have seen all the rooms spacious and available space is more than required.

Actually, they could have constructed 3 rooms out of 2 there.

Fing Fang - what time does this 'fast train' arrive? You'll be up against it if you don't leave central Amritsar for the border before 3:30pm. Actually the closer to three the better.

Swarma Shtbdi arrives at 13.35pm from Delhi. I'm travelling 4th March, so this should be ok right, not as much fog?

The LP guidebook says that the Grand Hotel runs tours to the Wagah border ceremony so I may stay there... anyone else been there?
