My husband leaves soon for a couple months in India. At the end of the year, he will be meeting a friend in ludhiana. His friend is flying in from u.s. and they are hatching a plan on how to meet. Plan A: his friend will try to meet him at the train station. Plan B: have a motel reservation and meet there. Last ditch effort Plan C: both call a gentleman I barely know there and try to connect through him assuming he is available and willing.

So, I am wondering if anyone recommends any cheap but respectable motels near the train station where they could stay atleast one night. Also any recommendations for the city of motels, veg restaurants or things to see/do would be most welcome.

I do not recollect any motel near Ludhiana Rly. station. Many dhabas serve exclusively vegetarian fare.

I was in Ludhiana in January 2012. Stayed at Park Plaza Ludhiana. i was impressed with it then, and apparently is even more upgraded. However, it is not cheap. It is on the main road ; there are many other hotels there.. A friend had recommended "A Hotel" so that is another to check on. See tripadvisor for some other decent sounding places.I dont recall any "Budget" places nr the train station. HOwever, by US standards, the good hotels are reasonably priced.
A bit outside town is Aveda, but it is not conveneint for the rail station.
Park Plaza and probably other hotels in the center, have a shuttle to/from the railroad station. It's about a 5 minute ride. Don't let them charge your husband outrageous prices though.

Based on my exper ience, they should meet in a hotel. The air pollution in Ludhiana was awful, which made even a short walk quite unpleasant. The main part of town is unattractive. So it is worth it to chose a decent hotel--it is definitely a needed oasis in this unappealing city.

I stayed in Hotel Bansi near Clock Tower/Chauraa Bazaar about 6 years ago it was around 400-500Rps. There are some nicer hotels in that area but I can't remember the names . Pollution is very bad in this area.

Sego, re the pollution: indeed!

It was the worst air i encountered in four trips to India. Perhaps it has been cleaned up in the last year, but i doubt it. One of my photos of Ludhiana shows a sign "Keep Ludhiana Clean"... next to a hill of garbage!
