Delhi-Amritsar in 1 day? Amritsar advice please

Hi,

I will be in Delhi and would like to see Amritsar but since I will be travelling on my own, I would like to just go and come back. I don't speak Hindi. Once I get off the station, is it well sign posted?

Would a day trip be possible? What is the dress code? Do u have to not eat non-veg the day you go or up to couple of days before? I know you have to wash your feet before you go but what about after?

Thanks.

With the fast trains, it can be done, but not sure how enjoyable it is. I never visited Amritsar but want to go. With that said, if all you can do is a long day trip, go for it!

It's a 6 hour train ride on the fastest train between the two places - Swarna Shatabdi- I don't see how just going and coming back would work. Plan for two days and a night at least if traveling by Shatabdi. Dress modestly (loose fitting clothes like a salwar kameez would be best) and cover your head when you enter the golden temple complex.

1. In Amritsar you can hire a Rickshaw/Auto-Tuk Tuk on nominal price to visit Golden Temple.
2. You can avoid Skirt Top inside Golden temple and can cover your head with Scarf.
3. You can speak english in Amritsar as tourist comes from every part of world.
4. At your hotel you can eat Non- Veg, inside temple permises it is not allowed.
5. When you enter in Golden Temple there is place where you can wash feet, shocks and shoes not allowed inside.

If you have few hours you can visit Boarder and see prade there.

You can take Shatabdi in the morning leaves at 7:20am reach Amritsar at 1:30pm.

Head directly to Golden temple, visit and complete darshan in 1-2 hours, Come out, eat in a hotel, whatever your preference is.

Take shatabdi back leaving amritsar at 4:50pm reaches delhi at 11:15pm same day.

You will be served meal both veg and non-veg in the trains. Let me know if you need any specific guidance, i visit almost every month.

I should go at least 2 days. We stayed in Hotel Grand, close to the railway station.
Apart from the Golden temple take you time for a visit to the Wagah border ceremony and the Durgiana temple.
The staff of the hotel can organize this for you.

It is "possible" (specially for a experienced person) in a touch-and-go but would such a hectic and tiring schedule would be worth specially when one has to see this place for the first time? It's not a place to just run around and there are also many important places nearby to see.To see the main place of the temple you need to stand in a long queue which starts early in the morning. Also not sure if you going there just to have few pics(selfie perhaps as per trend) or you have some spiritual angle as well.

Also take a note that you would be reaching very late in the night at Delhi if you make it somehow. The train might get late without any notice. When we went the train took extra 1 hour coming back to Delhi.Add few hours of hassles to find a auto/taxi and reach places. If you are Indian you would know the bus/train/plane schedule can be changed anytime.

Best advice would be to make 2 days as many has suggested already.

I don't think it is wise since you have only ten days and want to keep it simple http://www.indiamike.com/india/introduce-yourself-f76/simple-first-visit-for-10-days-t222440/.

See erail.in for the train schedule.

Booking tickets on short notice is possible on the foreign tourist quota, trains 12029/12031 from Delhi have this.

I don't think there is a morning train in the opposite direction with FTQ.

Thank you. I agree with your suggestions. Maybe the tour guides are suggesting very aggressive for six days and five nights Agra+Jaipur+Pushkar.
