Hi there,

I am from Vancouver BC, Canada. I am doing my research on Canadian expats living in Punjab. There are many people from Punjab in Canada and they are also returning to Punjab recently. However, interestingly I cannot find Canadian expats communities in Punjab. Does anyone know the following information?

1) Indo-Canadian community in Punjab
2) Any Canadian stores/ restaurants/ pubs/ shops where Canadians go to?
3) Any information where I would meet Canadians?
4) Which cities do most re-turning Indo-Canadians go to?

Through my research, I became more and more interested in Punjab. My dream is to go to Punjab one day to visits all of places I learned and meet people there.

Thank you so much for your help!
Cheers,

During the troubled times of the Khalistan movement in the 1980s many folk in the Punjab, mainly of the Sikh community, sought and got asylum status overseas, and a large majority of them went to Vancouver and Toronto because a third cousin's uncle was already there. Some have returned or have their feet in both places. You will find that many families from every large city and small town has a relative or ten in Canada. I don't think that there is an organised expat community and you will have to do a lot of spade-work to unearth the returnees.

Start with Amritsar, Jullandhar and Ludhiana, and then move on to Gurdaspur and Bhatinda.

Hi Amyy,

You can find Canadians in Surry who often visit to Punjab. You can plan your trip and hope you will enjoy it. Punjab can be cover in few days and India has lot of places to visit. For Canadians it is good to visit in winter, Air fare will low and nice weather in India that time.
Best Regards,

Hi Golghar, ViShVa and Surinder

Thanks for the replies!

I studied about the history of Punjab and the Sikh community and about why many people came to Canada, especially in Vancouver and Toronto, so I understand ViShVa's reply.

I found information that some people are returning to Punjab, but I have been difficult finding returnees who have Canadian citizenship or PR status in Punjab.

Any information is welcome.
Thank you for help!

Regards,
